A lighter moment:When Mom asked me to describe a picture

Looking back now I can only describe this as a very hilarious moment.  We were sitting quietly in my den and Mom wanted to know about a certain picture that we were discussing and then she asked me to describe it to her.

Lo and behold, we both laughed out loud at the same time!  I could not because I am vision-impaired and do not have enough vision to describe it.  Mom took my response in good spirits and the take away for me is that she does not consider me to be vision-impaired.

Good or bad?  I’ll take the good!

Thank you Nick! The new picture

Ah, yes and this is what it was!  A new picture courtesy of my Super. Nick.  He simply brought it to me and hung it up next to my other picture above my kitchen table!

Whereas I know what all of my other pictures look like, I have no idea what this one looks like!  Nick simply said that it was a vase of flowers and I accepted his explanation.

Now I’ll wait for Mom to tell me all about it when she visits me in a few months!

A humourous experience: Showing photos with no screens

This is probably one of the most hilarious experiences for me: showing photos with no screens. I'd like for you to think of it like this.

I am sitting at my computer and I invite my mom to come into my office because I wish to show her some photos that were sent to me by someone who had taken the time to snap them with their iPhone.

Of course, I have no idea what I am showing her and even worse is that I do not even know if the screen is on or off.  Mom sits and waits and after a moment's silence she tells me that my screen is off!  Bingo, and now I am aware that in order for her to see what I think she should be seeing I hasten to turn on my screen.

From here on in things run very smoothly. Mom does not comment on my faux pas and I do not even try to complain or defend myself but truth be told we are both laughing inwardly.

Here comes the cat who can tell the time! A picture of Pete

Now that I can no longer see pictures it means that I need to depend on others to tell me what things and persons look like.  And this was the case when my friend Debra sent me a picture of her beloved cat, Pete.

I guess that I had developed my own image of Pete but it was surely a different matter when Mom described him to me.

Somehow, I thought that Pete was grey but he is not.  However, I got his size right.  It does not matter; Pete is a lovable, loyal, and always surprising cat with an exciting personality.

An amazing experience: Gabriella and her picture taking

I am always so very happy whenever someone can take pictures with their iPhone and then send them to me.  There is a procedure for this entire process.

First, Gabriella and I decide what she is going to take.
Next, Gabriella takes the pictures with her iPhone.
Next, she looks at it to see if it has come out fine.
Then she sends it to my email address.
Finally, I detach and store the picture and then send it along to friends and family.

Now that I no longer have enough vision to see what she has taken, I need to depend on others to describe things for me. But my active imagination is always eagerly waiting to hear.

Gabriella has also found another purpose for her picture taking and this is that whenever she wants me to read a business card or something that has come in the mail, she takes a picture with her iPhone and then emails it to me.

A new challenge: Hanging the fallen picture

Now that I no longer have enough vision to hang my own pictures, I need to depend on others to do it for me. Here is what happened recently when one of my pictures fell off the wall.

In the good old days I would have picked it up and hung it back in its place. But, with not being able to see enough, it is difficult for me now.

I cannot decipher whether or not it is upside down or whether or not it is hanging straight.  In most cases I know what it is because of my excellent memory, but if I forget then I am in big trouble.

So, these are the reasons why I can no longer hang pictures when they have fallen or even new pictures.

Pictures That Cannot Be Described

One of the most difficult barriers between the sighted world and a blind person is this one; the inability to truly describe a picture to someone who is blind.  If a person is born blind, then you know that they have never been able to see pictures.  If they have been born with some vision, then chances are that they may be able to see some things but the picture would never be complete. It would be very difficult to describe pictures to them.

Even if you were to let them feel the shape of a rose for example, they would not know that it was a rose unless you told them that it was.  From real experience, I can tell you that feeling the shape of something is not the same or does not relate in the same way to when you feel a raised replica of the same thing.  In short, feeling a real rose is different to feeling its raised shape.

Having had vision and now not having very much, I can also tell you that it is very hard to describe pictures to someone who has never seen.  It's not the end of the world however.  I have two urls for you to visit and there you will discover how blind persons deal with pictures.

Visit www.nfb.org and www.rnib.org to learn more.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and tell the rest of the world how blind persons cope with pictures.
