A huge problem! Rogers did not fully explain and clarify

Maybe Rogers does not care but I’ll say this anyway. They did not fully explain and clarify and 5 agents later on the phone, I finally decided to give up and move my services elsewhere.

This is what happens when agents appear not to know about their own rules and services. When their stories to the customer are individually different.

When they appear to not really care and take the time to take care of their customers.
Or maybe it is something else?

Something new to learn: Learning to navigate new remotes

This is exactly what took place when I was forced to switch my cable TV services from Rogers to Bell. It could only have happened smoothly because of a fantastic technician named Lane.

Lane took the time to show me how to use my remote and at the end of it all I thanked him for having been there for me.

Lane not only showed me how to use my remote, he even had the foresight to think ahead and to find some work arounds for me. Thank you Lane!

Very disappointing: When Rogers missed the boat

Maybe this telecommunications company does not care but maybe they should.

When they fail to fully explain that they cannot provide a service, or maybe I should say that they are a bit too lazy to explain why they are unable to provide a service, this is when they lose longtime customers like me.

In today’s world too many do not take the time to either explain or to tell us what is going on. We seem to have lost our way when it comes to customer service. And in the blink of an eye, a customer is lost for good.

Thank you Lane! The wonderful Bell Canada technician

If only most of our technicians were just like Lane! The best ever Bell technician.

Lane was patient, went above the call of duty, and went out of his way to help me learn how to use my new remotes for engaging with my TV and cable box.

He took the time to explain. He took the time to understand how I needed to learn and above all he filled the session with entertaining anecdotes.

Thank you, Lane.

Some things never change! The unbelievable UPS story

In my humble opinion, this is a company that continues to struggle with customer service.
Their phone agents continue to talk over each other.
They continue to give differing messages over the phone.
They do not seem to have any idea as to how to ensure that packages arrive in a timely manner.

They claim that their drivers have attempted to deliver packages but in actuality this is so inaccurate.
In short, when their drivers do show up they are quite pleasant but this does not compensate for an office where agents don’t seem to even understand how their system works and they continue to contradict each other.

A silver lining: Dealing with FEDEX

I can only say that thanks to wonderful customer service at FEDEX, I was able to satisfactorily resolve my issue.

Just to summarize:
My monthly box to Mom arrived 2 weeks late.
The box was severely damaged and thoroughly ruined.
Items were opened and some were even stolen!

There was no need for this type of handling of the box. I have been sending boxes to Mom monthly since 2020 and this was the very worst example of a company’s mishandling of my stuff and the shipper’s utter lack of pro action.

He was rude, could care less, and in the end I had to take matters into my own hands.
Thank goodness for Ethel at FEDEX’s customer service department.

More than a mixed bag: The Pearson Airport agents

Well, I call this simply hit and miss!  Sometimes there are fantastic airport agents at Pearson Airport’s terminal 3 and at other times?  Well, the only way to describe these is to say that it is a horrible experience!

The times when I am unlucky to encounter horrible agents are when these are the ones who either deliberately choose to ignore me when I attempt to engage with them or they simply do not care, choosing instead to brush me off.

This is what happened on May 31, 2023.  I had the misfortune to encounter agents who were rude, dismissive, and downright disrespectful.  It’s just another challenge for me as a vision-impaired passenger.

Not too bad this time: Shopping for a new keyboard

Not one of my favourite things to do but it needs to be done from time to time.

Sometimes one is lucky to find a very helpful customer service rep but then again this is not always the case. And this is what happened on this particular day when I went to buy a new keyboard.

The first customer service rep seemed quite disinterested when I approached and asked for his assistance.  He simply said that they did not have what I was looking for but on the other hand the second customer service rep went out of his way to help.

I can only describe my twin experiences as night and day.

Scary times: When the phone lines failed me

This is yet another blatant example of how some companies deal with their customers.  That is, until you demand to speak with a supervisor.

In this case it was Bell Canada and I rose on this particular Sunday morning to discover that both my home and business lines were not working.  I emailed Susan, explained my situation, and she was soon at my door.

We phoned the Bell support line using her cell and explained what was going on.  We waited for two hours and when no one had either contacted us or had shown up we had to repeat the process to discover that our problem had not even been reported.  So we demanded to speak to a supervisor.

We had to repeat that I was vision impaired and that I needed urgent help.  Thank God that the supervisor was able to help immediately and within a half hour the problem was resolved.

So what does this tell me?  Demand to speak to a supervisor if I find that no one is listening!

Makes for pleasant dining: The Old Country Inn

This is probably one of my favourite restaurant haunts to visit as often as I can and why?  Both building and staff are so very welcoming, friendly, and most of all accessible.

There is more than enough space between the tables for me to maneuver.  Access into the restaurant is great and the staff is so very attentive to duty and to ensuring that needs and requirements of customers are met.  Especially so for those of us with accessibility needs.

They do not make me feel that I am asking too much of them. They are quick to anticipate what I need with regard to descriptions of the food dishes and when I need to know where they have placed my food on the table.  They ask me what else I would need and they seem to be always watchful of what’s going on.

Not very pleasant: Dealing with insurance policies

With more and more companies mandating and demanding that a customer go online to complete forms, it is always a huge relief for me any time I get a company whose customer service reps are ready to assist me over the phone.

So many of these online facilities and websites are still inaccessible, unusable, and not very navigable for blind/vision-impaired persons and even mainstream persons complain.

This is how I felt when the wonderful agents at Manu Life Insurance assisted me on the phone to complete forms for my medical travel insurances as I needed them to travel to Portugal and England.

They were patient, very courteous, and extremely helpful and after about 20 minutes I was good to go.

A different experience: Communicating at the Apple store

A few months ago I had a very interesting experience at the Apple Store. For the most part, I am always very satisfied with the communication that I encounter there but this was a bit different and also a bit amusing for me.

Upon entering, the very friendly customer service rep escorted me to a spot towards the back of the store and I did not have long to wait. When the Genius Bar person came over to work with me, my friend told me that she was
hard of hearing. My first impression was mixed.

For whereas I felt that it was great to have a hard of hearing Genius Bar person working for Apple, I did not think that this would work because how would I be able to communicate with her when I could not see her gestures?

It would be very difficult for us to communicate; a person who was hard of hearing and a vision-impaired person?  The Apple supervisor realized immediately. I was very sorry about the situation but all ended well.

The luck of the draw: Immigration officers at Pearson Airport

I don't think that the immigration officers at Pearson Airport should be considered any differently than others that I have met throughout my travels.

There are great ones, some not so great ones, and ones that continue to disappoint me. There are ones that are friendly, ones that are simply doing their jobs, and others who seem downright unhappy to be in their jobs.

I cannot say that male officers are better than female officers and visa versa. The same for older officers versus younger officers. I guess that what I am trying to say is that it all comes down to the luck of the draw.

I simply listen carefully to the tone of the officer's voice when choosing how to interact. A friendly tone has me smiling all the way and a stern or serious tone has me adopting a similar approach.

Friendly places and friendly faces: At the Massy Pharmacy

It always helps, whenever one enters a pharmacy, that there is a friendly pharmacist just waiting to be of service. Most of all, one who is friendly, helpful, and so very knowledgeable.

This is the description of the pharmacist at the Massy pharmacy. I simply enjoy my encounters with her each time I visit this particular pharmacy. She does not treat me any differently as someone with a vision impairment. She takes everything in stride. She answers my questions, shows me where to insert my card when I come to pay for my purchases, and she is always so very pleasant.

I just wish that more persons in the service industry could be more like her.

A new and exciting experience: Working with Aaron remotely

This is probably one of my most challenging experiences; working remotely with anyone, at best. Aaron is probably one of the best developers/support persons that I have ever had the chance to work with. But still, for me, it always makes me so very nervous.

On this particular very early Monday morning, we got together with me in the Caribbean and Aaron at his post in Ohio. Aaron was so very patient! He guided me to set up Teamviewer and then he installed Malwarebytes for me.

After this Aaron performed all of the updates; from updating Windows 10 to Google Chrome and Firefox. Then he cleaned up other pieces of software for me.

This took two sessions and each session lasted for about an hour. What an experience, but at the end of it all I was extremely grateful to an ever-patient Aaron!

She is a Godsend: My favourite pharmacist

I could not ask for a better pharmacist. She works at the Shoppers Pharmacy Drug Mart in the Bridlewood Mall.

She is patient, understands how to interact with me as a vision-impaired customer, and knows exactly how to help me identify my medications.

She is always ahead of the game, so to speak, because she has already labeled my bottles with distinguishing marks by the time I am there to pick up my prescriptions. She goes way beyond the call of duty but, sad to say, I do not even know her name!

She knows my first name and always calls me by it. She is a gem and I thank her for being my favourite pharmacist!

A tedious but necessary chore: Taking care with the prescription bottles

This is probably always going to be a challenge for me and a very important one.  Whenever I receive more than one prescription bottle from the pharmacy I need to ensure that I am able to distinguish each of them because one error can cost me medically.

I have to say that my pharmacy and their super staff do understand and are always willing and ready to help me decipher the difference.  So, whenever I go to pick up my medications they have already labelled them for me by putting them in bottles that I can distinguish.   They do this with tape and elastics.

I am truly grateful to the Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacy!

A refreshing experience: In the Air Canada lounge at the Ottawa Airport

I was pleasantly surprised when the Air Canada agent escorted me to the business lounge to await the departure of my flight from Ottawa to Toronto in November 2018.  I had decided to catch an earlier flight back to Toronto so this meant that I would have to wait for about two hours.

The lounge was nice and friendly.  The service agents were extremely attentive to me and kept checking on me to see if I needed anything.  The atmosphere, as a whole, was extremely pleasant and despite my being afraid that I would be forgotten, it never happened.

What I liked most about this lounge was that it seemed to be well laid out. Not too big and not too cluttered.  Just the right size.

Refreshing times: At the Apple store

This is a store that never seems to sleep but I have grown accustomed to this and each time I walk in I never stop marveling at how helpful and attentive the staff is.

I do not even need to tell them that I am vision impaired; they always seem to know it.  They are alert and very quick to understand my needs.  They give me my appointment and then I am back to get my stuff updated and whatever else I need to do.

On my most recent trip I met a wonderful young man whose name is Leandro and he is in a wheelchair.  Leandro was so very attentive, accommodating, and so very helpful.  He got me going and then handed me over to his colleague to finish off my requests.

This store is located in the Fairview Mall in Scarborough and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking Apple services.

Pleasant dining moments: Jaffa 2018

It is probably one of my favourite restaurants to visit in Trinidad and it is not just for the food alone.  It is for the great customer service that the staff provides me, as a vision-impaired person.

They are very attentive and courteous.  They describe everything to me and they are there for me at every step.

From the head waiter to the waiter at the table and from the server to the folks at the service desk.  I call this end-to-end service!
