An improvement: Mom's new hearing aids

 I think that Mom’s new hearing aids are working, for the most part.  She is very meticulous about making sure that she wears them and that she recharges them every night.

Truth be told, I still need to do what I have been doing ever since she got her first set of hearing aids several years ago.  

I need to go close to her when speaking with or to her.  I must speak clearly and moderately.  I need to ensure that only one person speaks to her at a time when I am around her.

If I do all of these things then all will be well.  It is not always perfect but absolutely good enough.

Getting used to Mom's hearing aids

I just need to come to terms with how Mom’s hearing aides work.  They will never be perfect for her but they will help her in a much better way.

All that I, and others, need to do is this:
Face her when interacting with her.
Go close enough to her.
Let one person at a time talk to her.
Lower the volume of the TV before you talk with her.
Most of all?  Be patient!

That's just me! Sorting out my winter sweaters

 Call me fussy but I just think that as someone with a vision impairment, it is imperative for me to know the colours of my sweaters and especially so when I am unable to see the them. And this is why I sort them before winter is upon us.

I need to know what colour sweater I am wearing so that I can fully imagine how I look.  I need to put the colours in alphabetical order in my drawer so that I am organized and feel in control.

When someone tells me that they like my sweater and that the colour suits me, I need to know which sweater they are referring to and what colour suits me.

Yes, I may be fussy but that’s me.  My winter sweaters and me and this applies to all of my sweaters as a whole.

A necessary evil! Getting ready to clean the storage closet

 

My storage cupboard was cleaned several years ago; too many for me to reveal but the time had come to do another cleaning.

That is, to throw out unwanted things, rearrange things in a logical order, and use those utility cartons from the Metro Supermarket to arrange and store various things.

It took Mom, Stephie and me about 2 hours to get it all done and at the end of the day?  The storage cupboard looks much better.  More orderly, much less cluttered, and I can find what I am looking for much more easily.

Hopefully I’ll keep my storage cupboard tidy and in good order for a very long time.

Thank you my faithful kettle! The mystery of the departing kettle

My kettle and I had been together for more than 10 years so it was a bit sad to see her finally leave me. For the most part, she worked well except that at times she had difficulty when negotiating the outlet in the wall.  

Many times I blamed it on the outlet but in the final stages of her life, I sadly realized that it was a faulty connector from my beloved kettle to the outlet that was causing the problem.

I said a sad so long to her, placed her in a nice box, and took her down to the recycle room. I thanked her again and gently tapped her box before leaving.

Now I have a new kettle that looks much like my departed one and hopefully she will stay with me for a very long time.

Nothing new! When Mom rearranged my freezer

I  know, I know!  When Mom rearranged my freezer she did it to help me out but, truth be told, this is what happened.

I had to learn where some things were placed but the good thing is that Mom knows how I like things and above all her packing skills are much better than mine.  So, at the end of the day it all worked out well.

It was just the shock of learning that she had lovingly done it and did not tell me.  That’s okay, though, because over the years Mom has rearranged other things for me and I live to tell it all!

A necessary activity: Sorting the mail upon my return

 This is probably one of the most mundane tasks for me and each time I return from a trip I need to do this.

When my friend Gubby looked after things for me, she used to separate things into 2 piles, one for me, one for Mom, and then another pile for other mail.

Now, however, with Nick helping me everything goes into one main pile with magazines off to one side and the rest of the mail in another pile.

Thank goodness that I have Stephie to help me out.  I work with her to sort again, open and read.

What a surprise! When I hung the Crucifix upside down

 

Looking back at this now I can only smile to myself because this is probably one of the regular challenges for me. That is, whenever I hang things incorrectly.

Good thing that my friendly neighbour Sandra came to my rescue.  She gently told me that the poor Crucifix was hanging upside down!  So I asked her to hang it right for me and she willingly obliged.

Hanging pictures or anything else on my walls will always be a challenge for me as someone with a vision impairment.  I willingly accept this and take it all in with a smile!

Very frustrating! Over there or over where?

This is probably one of the most challenging circumstances for me to deal with and I can only do my best to live with it.  It all takes place whenever someone in a store or supermarket tells me “over there.”  

Over there really does not mean much to me, especially so when someone either points to a spot or makes some other sort of visual sign.  I need to be given specific directions or I’ll be asking, over where?

I need to ensure that those directing me can describe what or where they wish me to go.  Pointing or giving me some sort of a visual sign does not help me.

Nor does nodding help me.  I am unable to hear when a head movement is used or pointing is used.

Very confusing: When noise affects me

 

I do not think that I am unique in any way.  Noise almost always affects each of us in many different ways and for me it plays havoc with my ability to find my way around.

If noise is too loud then I can often become disoriented and it also affects my ability to concentrate and to think clearly.  I also find that it can easily sap my energy.  

My preference would be to have the noise levels as low as possible but this is not always possible or even probable.

A necessary combination: Hearing and seeing

 

This is how Mom and I engage and communicate with the rest of the world.  I hear for her and she sees for me.  It did not take long for us to coordinate and pool our resources.  On the whole it works very well, but every now and then it is I who needs to readjust my techniques to meet her needs.  

I have to face Mom head on or directly when speaking with her.  I have to be close to her and I have to use the right voice level when speaking with her.  

On the other hand, Mom uses her very keen eyesight to guide me.  She is very precise with her directions and knows exactly what she wishes me to find and inspect.

All in a day’s life.

An interesting moment: When Confidence, the stick, got lost

This is the name that my mom has given to a broom stick!  It is tall and sturdy and she uses it to maintain her balance when walking around her home.  She is always so very careful to have it close by but on this particular day she did not remember where she had left Confidence and now I decided to help her search for it.  So, off we both went.

Mom using her keen eyesight, and I using my memory to help me check out possible places where she could have left it.   So, the search proceeded with sight and memory.

I found Confidence close to Mom’s bed and what a relief it was.  Confidence was propped against the bed head.  Relief for us both!

First time after Covid: Mom and I to travel

 Traveling these days has become more of a challenge and even more so after the days of the Covid pandemic.  There are challenges to face and greater ones for those who are vision-impaired and those with hearing challenges.

For Mom and me it is even more of a challenging ordeal.  I am vision-impaired and she is hearing impaired.  In short, I am our ears and she is our eyes.

Thank goodness that we have a good rapport.  I hear and she sees and we communicate well with each other.  Nevertheless, it is indeed more challenging.  Especially so these days when at some airports there are agents who simply do not appear to possess any sort of awareness training, and are sorely lacking in knowing how to engage and how to communicate effectively.
