A necessary combination: Hearing and seeing

This is how Mom and I engage and communicate with the rest of the world.  I hear for her and she sees for me.  It did not take long for us to coordinate and pool our resources.  On the whole it works very well, but every now and then it is I who needs to readjust my techniques to meet her needs.

I have to face Mom head on or directly when speaking with her.  I have to be close to her and I have to use the right voice level when speaking with her.

On the other hand, Mom uses her very keen eyesight to guide me.  She is very precise with her directions and knows exactly what she wishes me to find and inspect.

All in a day’s life.

Remembering my childhood mirror

I can still remember this very special and precious mirror. Although I could not really see very much because of very poor vision, it was enough for me to be able to put my nose right up against it and strain my eyes to see whatever I could.

The mirror resided in my mom's wardrobe and each time she opened it to find something or put something in, there I was, glued to my childhood mirror. It was a full length mirror and to this day it does still indeed live on. The other day I remembered it when my mom went to her wardrobe but now things are very different.

Yes, I know that it is still there and yes I can still touch its surface but no! I can no longer see anything in it and so I have to depend on my childhood memories.

In those days I used to be able to see a glimpse of my reflection and I used to play games with myself; swaying back and forth in front of the mirror to see if I could catch a glimpse of myself. I had so much fun but I'll never know if my mom caught on to my childish games.

There is no room in this world for bullying and each day we fail to take action against bullying it is another day that we allow others to bully us and our kids. Our heroes and role models are the ones who have made us proud; those brave young men and women who gave their lives for us in past wars and those who continue to do so. They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.

I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! In the car or right there in your home! On your i device or computer!

Please join my campaign against bullying (CAB) by supporting my efforts to keep on writing and recording!
If you truly care then you will certainly dare!"

Imagine the surprise

I always remember what it felt like when I saw what certain persons looked like after my first cornea transplant. Like many others, I had a picture in my mind as to what certain things and persons would look like before that great day. But then, what a surprise in so many ways!

Some persons were taller than I had imagined. Some were shorter, some were fatter or thinner, and some were even of a different skin color. I had to learn fast and put everything into perspective in a big hurry.

Birds looked differently than I had imagined. Objects were bigger, things were brighter, and the shapes and sizes were all things that I had to get used to. Nevertheless, they were all surprises in their own way but all in a day's learning for me.

The skies and clouds sure surprised me. The brightness of the sun, the beauty of the moon, and the grass, flowers, ocean, and beach were all different than I had imagined them to be.

Can blind persons enjoy the outdoors?

This is a question that I am often asked and absolutely why not?  My inability to enjoy the wonders of Mother Nature visually in no way prevents me from enjoying through smell, touch, and feel.  Unlike many other blind persons, I am extremely lucky and fortunate that I can use visualization to help me enjoy the outdoors.  Having previously had enough vision whereby I was able to see color, I can now use my visualization to enjoy nature and the outdoors in a very unique way.

Most blind persons have never had the good fortune to be able to see the outdoors but that does not prevent them from doing so.  They, like me, can smell the sweet fragrances of flowers, feel the cool wet grass beneath their feet, enjoy the shade of tall trees, play with the sand on beaches, swim in the pleasant water of lakes, rivers, and oceans, and enjoy the cool fresh air in any season of the year.

Blind persons can definitely enjoy walks in the woods and along the beach.  They can ride bicycles built for two.  They can swim, and even enjoy such water sports as sailing, canoeing, plus more.  They can even enjoy such winter sports as skiing, ice skating, snow shoeing, plus more.  In short, despite their lack of vision, they can still enjoy the outdoors.  Ask me how do I most enjoy the outdoors and my response would be:  By ice skating on outdoor rinks, swimming in the ocean, walking in the woods, and lying on the cool sand of warm sunny beaches.
