A memory forever! Blowing out the candles

What a wonderful memory for me to cherish! Birthday tea with my dear friend Gabriella!  Lots to eat, lots to savour, and so much to smile about and to be grateful for! Then, to blow out the candles!

Gabriella is probably one of the most thoughtful persons in my life! She is always there to share in my moments of triumph and she is always there to advise, suggest, and guide me!

My birthday celebration with her in May 2019 is one that I shall always remember! Thank you, my good friend!

My best friends forever! Birthday celebrations with the girls

I shall always remember my birthday on May 26, 2019! A cozy little party for me; with Char, Chris, Dar, and Heather all gathered around a dining table loaded with Chinese food!

Everyone ate with gusto and the punch was simply heavenly. Then the girls brought out the cake and I blew out the candles. Then, the gift to remember! A lovely Montreal Canadiens hockey bear cradling a throw cover in his arms!

How very thoughtful of these girls! My friends of so many years! Honest, cheerful, and always there for me!

Thank you, ladies! A memory forever! You will always be in my heart and in my mind!

I left my heart in Montreal! Montreal forever

Oh, my beloved Montreal! Each time I see you it is as if I never left you and each time I sample your sumptuous and delicious cuisine I can only say to myself how very lucky that I can still do so!

You will never know how much I still miss you and how much I will always appreciate that it was you who gave me that wonderful opportunity to realize who I was, why I needed to exist, and how much you helped me to find my freedom!

It was you who played such an important part in helping me to get started in life! It was you who showed me the way to logic and grounding and it was you who taught me what I know today. To keep on fighting the good fight and to appreciate and enjoy every moment of every day!

You will always be in my heart, you beautiful one, and no matter where I am and what I am doing, you will always be in my thoughts! Stay well now until I see you again!

Time to relax: Taking time to enjoy

We live in a very busy world and I know that for me it is important to take the time to enjoy!

As someone who is vision-impaired, I find that it is even more important for me to be able to enjoy the things that make me smile and laugh!  I spend so much time concentrating on ensuring that technology works for me in my daily life. I believe that I need to concentrate much more than the sighted person because I need to compensate for the loss of my sight.

I need to focus more, to listen more, and to pay attention more. Hence, the importance for me to take more time to enjoy more!

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

Not an easy task: Fighting the bulge

I do not think that too many of us would like to admit that we need to fight the bulge. But for me it is not just about fighting the bulge, it is about others telling me that I need to do so.

Yes! I can certainly feel my stomach and know that I need to do something, but Mom is always there to remind me and help me to fight it.  She sees it, she pokes me in the tummy, then she gets to work to help me.

I need to be serious about this! I need to take action and I need to tell myself that it is not just me who feels it! Others are seeing it as well!

I’m Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day!

I miss it so much! Where are you, my beloved grass?

The winter of 2018 – 2019 was probably one of the coldest and most bitter in memory for me. For the most part I had to deal with lots of snow, ice, very cold winds, and endless days of wintry weather.

I sure missed my beloved grass! It was totally out of sight and for me, who simply loves to walk across lush green grass, bend and gather hands full of blades, enjoy the cool touch of dewdrops on the blades, and smell the fragrance of freshly cut grass, it was simply so sad that I could not do any of these things during the winter.

Now, many would say that in the general scheme of things, there is simply no opportunity to enjoy any of these grassy activities during the winter, but still! I sure missed my beloved grass!

Just another challenge: A miserable cold

For most of us a miserable cold is something that we could definitely do without. But, as a vision-impaired person it seems to be more of a challenge, and why? Well, here goes!

My hearing is affected and as a result I have difficulty navigating my way around my home, and outdoors as well.

My sense of taste is also affected and as a result I have difficulty when I go to taste my food and to prepare it.  I am unable to tell if my food is either too salty, too sweet, or too spicy.

Then, if I have to deal with a runny nose or a stuffed up one, I need to take time to deal with this and it often throws off my concentration.

Not being able to hear very well when I have a cold also affects my ability to work with my voice software and with voiceover on my iPhone.

Then, throw in runny eyes and this can also affect my entire ability to function.

A good time was had by all: CCB mysteries event, May 03

On May 03, 2019 my CCB mysteries chapter, in collaboration with the CNIB, held a fun evening event. This was our spring event and for the most part it came off as a success.

We served light refreshments and our resident fortune teller, Jason, was a hit. We also played some mystery games and even had time to put on a skit.

The audience was small but quite lively and they appeared to be engaged at all times. A good time was had by all and this is going to help us plan for our next CCB Mysteries event in the fall.

A useful strategy: Focusing more

Over the years I have learned that in order to beat the push and rush of a busy world, I need to focus more.  Not just more, but to ensure that I focus on one thing at a time.

As someone who is vision impaired, I find that for me it is important to focus on my focus, so to speak, or rather I should say that it is paramount for me to focus on one thing at a time.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to multitask, but for me, when I need to depend on my other senses without being able to see what I am doing, I need to ensure that all of my other senses are working and functioning at their maximum.

If I keep to this strategy then I am able to stay on course.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

A historic day: At the Senate Standing Committee hearing

I don’t think that I will ever forget this day: a historical one for me.

Weather-wise, it was a miserable day as Sue drove me to the studio. The rain was pouring and for the good driver that she is, she  got me there on time and safely.

We had to wait for a bit but finally, when I was seated next to the Honourable David Omley, past Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, I was ready to roll as they say!

I hope that I did a good job with my presentation but unfortunately I developed a coughing fit right after I was finished with my presentation and had to take a two minute break. David was very helpful as he went out and fetched Sue who brought me some water. That helped and saved the day for me.

I was really glad that the Honourable David was there beside me as he helped to make things more comfortable and much less stressful.  As a person with a vision impairment, it is always uncomfortable when I sit in a room with cameras facing me and others can see me but, in turn, I cannot see them.

Now I can laugh about it! When the mandarin rolled away

Oh boy! I can only describe this experience as one that happened before; one filled with challenge and humor.

On this particular morning, the little mandarin slipped from my fingers and fell onto my kitchen floor and then it decided to roll away.

At first I thought that it had stayed somewhere on my kitchen floor, but no!  It did not!

After searching on my hands and knees and using my cane to help me search, I reasoned that because it had hit the side of my foot when falling, it probably ended up somewhere in my carpeted dining room. I was right.

So, with the utmost of care, I decided to get down on all fours and start searching. My main mission was to ensure that I did not squash it or step on it.

Bingo! I eventually found it lying close to the left leg of one of my dining room chairs. I did not squash it and it remained intact.  What a relief!

Remembering Henry: A sweet, kind man

This is how I would describe the late Henry Young and he was so much more.

Henry was the dad of my sister-in-law Gayle, and I met and got to know him when Gayle married my brother Jeffrey.  Henry was always so good to me.  Very respectful, a true gentleman, and I shall never forget what he said to me when he heard that I had successfully sued the Canadian Government over their inaccessible websites.

This is what he said to me, “So, you beat city hall, eh!” I knew that he was genuinely proud of me and a good supporter.

What I shall always remember him for is that he was never one to be uncomfortable around me as a vision-impaired person. He was always willing to help me at social gatherings and he never left me out of the conversation.

Rest in Peace now, Henry! Until we meet again!
