My dearest grade school teacher! Remembering my favourite Mrs. Mauns

Ah yes!  She was one of my favourite teachers!  She was always there for me when I attended Primary School.  She helped to mold me. She made me smile almost every day and she was always there to protect me, share positive thinking, but most of all?  She helped me to develop an attitude to think outside the box!

Mrs. Mauns was everything that any child could ask for in a teacher!  Patient to the end was what she was.  Innovative, entertaining, and always there to guide, advise, mildly scold and so much more!

Thank you, my Dear Mrs. Mauns!  My teacher forever!

Hard to know! Why is Rico crying?

It never fails!  It is almost always difficult to determine why Mom’s adopted cat Rico is crying!  ! I have been told that cats cry for almost everything.  When they are happy, or when they greet someone they like.  Or it could even be when they wish to share in someone’s food!

Rico cries often!  His cries are loud and persistent and he cries at any time of the day!  Rico is not the friendliest of cats but I love him, nevertheless!

Frustrating times! Losing cable

 I guess that most of us take it for granted that our cable will always be there for us but I have learned the hard way that my cable service should never be taken for granted.  No!  I am extremely fortunate to have cable service in the first place because there are literally millions in this world who do not have this luxury.

It feels like having one of my fingers removed whenever cable service goes!   My home goes very quiet because my TV stands waiting for cable service to return.  Most of the time it returns quickly but there are times when it goes off for hours.  

I often smile to myself when I think of the good old radio that never fails me.  It is always there for me, whereas with cable!  Well, I must be thankful for cable service!

Cherished memories forever! So long to the Christmas tree for another year

If anything, my beloved Christmas tree is one of the few constants in my life.  Or should I clarify by saying that it is Mom’s Christmas tree!  Each year Mom and I take great pains to fetch her beloved treasure from a shelf high up in her storage cupboard.  I climb onto a chair and then I gingerly remove the somewhat heavy box and then hand it down to her waiting hands.  Then together we walk to the designated spot on her counter where the Christmas tree will stand until after the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6.

Mom is very firm on where she wants her beloved Christmas tree to stand.  It sure is a beautiful work of art that she bought so many years ago and she turns it on almost every day during the Christmas holiday season.  Visitors to her home continue to admire it.

I am always very sad whenever the time comes to remove it and put it away but that’s life, and as I say to myself, it’s all in a day’s work.

A challenge: Losing power

 

At the best of times, losing power is not a very pleasant circumstance. But when it happens at Mom’s home, I feel even more vulnerable.

Mom and I usually pack a back pack of patience when this happens.  Everything is shut down, from her appliances to her TVs and my computer and i devices.  Everything goes very quiet and we have no choice but to sit and wait.  We do our best not to open the fridge and it's a good thing that we have running water!

Sometimes the outage could last for an hour or so but most times it is quite a bit longer. All in a day’s challenge.

No great surprise: Online banking set up

I really consider this to be a necessary evil but thank goodness I have trusted help around me.  I simply find online banking to be cumbersome, often inaccessible and unusable, and I really feel so very badly for seniors and those who I refer to as technically shy.  In addition, there are those who did not grow up in the era of technology and as a result it is even more challenging for these folks.

So, what I do is to heavily depend on my trusted help to assist me to get through these challenges.  Am I lazy?  I do not think so!

Trying to set up online banking for the first time is quite a chore and as a vision-impaired person I have to put all of my trust in the one assisting me to do it. If I do not know this person then I feel even more vulnerable.

Happy times: Fetching the newspapers

I have designated this to be one of my daily chores while I visit Mom.  I truly enjoy doing this for her because I know how much she enjoys reading her daily newspapers.  

There are three different daily editions and Mom takes her time to read them while she has her breakfast.  When I wake up, I first check the window sill to see if the newspapers have been slipped through her kitchen window and I do this between 6 and 7 AM.  If they have arrived then I grab them and place them on her foot stool and there they sit waiting for her to pick them up and to start her daily reading.

If they have not come at around 6 AM, I keep checking until they have arrived.  Sometimes, the person delivering Mom’s newspapers will call out a good morning in greeting as he puts the newspapers through her kitchen window and I always return the greeting.

I always enjoy this greeting and most times I would engage this person in pleasantries.  Such joy for me!
