Reflections: Those spanking new windows

It was worth the wait and now they are here.  I cannot appreciate their beauty but friends and family tell me that they look so good!  My windows are finally here!

I love them because they keep out the cold air during the winter and when summer rolls around we shall see how they stand up to the frightfully hot outdoor humidity.

There was a lot of work to be done before they finally came.  I needed help to pack things away and move furniture away from the windows and balcony doors.  Things needed to be covered up so as to prevent dust from making a muck of everything.

I know that I was so very worried as to how things would go before the actual date but thankfully everything worked out fine and with my friends Sue, Sandra, and Gabriella to help out, all's well that ends well.

Precious memories forever: When the dogs greeted me

Oh, boy!  I can still remember those flailing tails and booming voices of my dogs as they used to greet me when I would come home from school or from anywhere else.  They would be jumping all around me and then leaping to my shoulders to catch my attention but the most memorable moment was when I returned home from England after having spent a year there as a student.

For one fleeting moment I thought that they would have forgotten me but how wrong I was.  No, no!  Not at all!  As soon as they saw me they went crazy!

They barked!  They howled with delight!  They danced and flailed their tails!  And all I could do was to simply stand there and reach out my arms to them!  Ah, yes!  They were my most loyal friends!  My Lion and my Tiger!

Then the whole episode was repeated days later when I traveled to my granny's home to see Boyo and Brownie!  No difference!  Same loyal and loving reception!

Great memories: Happy times in the Savannah

hey sure were such happy times for me and they are times that shall always remain in a very special corner of my heart.

I can still remember learning to fly a kite with my dad and playing all kinds of ball games with him and my brothers.  I remember racing around on Jeffrey's scooter with him running alongside me and laughing at the top of his voice.  I remember running as hard as I could with Jeffrey and Nancy and enjoying it so much as the fresh, cool air blew gently through my hair and across my cheeks.

Then there were the times when Dad and I would take our dog, Yella, for walks and she would just go off and roll around in smelly dirt and then Dad would scold her before taking her home to give her a bath and another scolding.

Then Dad would take Jeffrey and me to see the race horses and we would stand there watching them do their morning exercises and Dad and Jeffrey would describe everything to me.

Then there were the more quiet times: walking with Mom and Dad in the Savannah, feeling the cool grass under my feet, listening to the sweet singing birds,  inhaling the fragrance of nearby flowers, and sitting quietly on the benches while Dad read and Mom and I chatted.

Ah, yes!  Those cherished memories for a lifetime.

Great reflections: Imagining while sitting in my high chair

These were the times  when I was growing up that I got to truly imagine.  How well I remember doing this as I sat there fighting off bouts of fever and tonsillitis! As a child I suffered much from tonsillitis and spent too many moments either in bed or seated in my high chair with Mom close by.

I still remember those days.  I would be overcome with high fever and tonsillitis and Mom would have to look after me.  She would give me a hot bath, feed me the usual soup, juice, and toast, and then dress me in warm PJs and let me sit in a high chair until I told her that I wanted to go to bed. Then she would lift me out of the chair and put me in my bed.

However, as I sat in my high chair, shaking from the fever, I did manage to imagine. I imagined so many things!  I dreamed of becoming a story teller and writing about fairies, princes, princesses, and kings and queens.  Then I dreamed of becoming a lawyer and then I dreamed of becoming a good swimmer and ice skater.  These were the major things but, of course, there were many other imaginings.

Guess what?  I am so very delighted and humbled to say that my imagination has turned into reality!  I am now an audio mystery writer, and I can ice skate and swim reasonably well.  However, I am still working on becoming a lawyer.

Gosh!  I need to thank my imagination, don't you think?

Fond memories: Growing up with the cousins

I can honestly say that memories of growing up with my cousins were ones of cherished and never to be forgotten times. There are so many memories for me to look back on but I'll tell you honesty that if you ever wanted to talk about equality, then my cousins showed how it was done.

They never differentiated against me!  They always treated me without any semblance of being afraid to play with me, talk with me, and have so much fun with me.

They walked with me, talked with me, swam with me, played hide and seek with me, plus so much more.  They even played football and cricket with me and never grumbled whenever I asked for help.  They even played cards with me and taught me so much.

They were mainstream kids who adapted so well to playing with a kid who was vision impaired.  We were close and saw each other so very often.  My, how I loved each of them in their own special way and even today we still manage to stay connected.

We love reminiscing about the good old times: building sand castles and water pools on the beach, running with the dogs, and cutting out photos from Mom's magazines, plus so much more! These memories will be mine forever and my cousins will be mine forever.

Lessons for a lifetime: What did I learn in England?

Despite it being so long ago I can honestly tell you that I learned so much and these are the lessons that have helped to shape me as a person.

I did not just learn how much Britain had to endure during those World Wars, I learned the true meaning of the phrase "stiff upper lip."  I also learned how hard this great country fought to stay alive and what it did in order to triumph and live to tell the tale.

I learned why Britain is often referred to as "Great Britain" and I also learned all about the important part Royalty plays in its history.  I learned all about a new culture and I came to appreciate the challenges that others face and the diverse challenges at that.

I learned to appreciate my family even more and I learned not to take anything for granted.  I learned to be more giving and sharing and I learned what selflessness is all about.

Most of all, I learned all about sacrifice, loyalty, and how not to give up in the face of adversity.  I learned how to endure and problem solve and I learned never to take anyone for granted and to appreciate friendships.

Lucky me! Memories of the Grange

This was my home away from home when I studied in England and I must say that it was one of the best places that any student could have hoped for. It was extremely luxurious with large bedrooms, comfortable beds, and the facilities for our recreation were top notch.

I can still picture the dining room, lounge, and living room in my mind. There was a garden just outside of the dining room and the grounds were simply immaculate.

Now, looking back on it all, I can truly appreciate it much more than I did then.  I had so much to be thankful and grateful for but unfortunately for me I did not see the true picture then.

This was a once in a lifetime experience that any teen would have died for but I am afraid that I may not have truly appreciated it then.  However, it is never too late to look back and remember.

In essence, I stayed at a classy hotel and I did not even know it.  I had the good fortune to be accommodated at a place that so many teens my age would have absolutely died for and have wished for.

Maybe some day I will return there, to Christopher Grange on Youens Way in Liverpool.  Just to see it once more and to silently say thank you for having enabled me to live there for one year.  I was the lucky one!
