So sad to leave! Preparing to return home

 

I have always said that when preparing to return home to Canada, one of the most difficult things for me is leaving Mom!  It does not get any easier and the best thing for me is to simply accept this and to find ways to deal with it!

We have such a wonderful relationship!  We are best of friends!  She is the big sister that I never had!  She is my adviser, my fashion consultant, my sounding board, my comfort, my solace, and so much more!  She is also my eyes, and as a vision-impaired person I depend on her to tell me when I have missed a spill, when I need to ensure that my clothes match and much more.

Mom is always there to look out for me!  She describes the images on the TV, and she reads the headlines in the newspapers to me!  Ah yes, leaving Mom is no easy feat, but to be positive: There are more times ahead!

What a clatter! When the cups fell

 

Looking back on this moment it sure made me smile!  I was visiting Mom and was just reaching for something in one of her kitchen cupboards when it happened.

Yes!  The cups decided to leave their positions in the cupboard and to come tumbling down.  They fell on the floor and made a loud clattering sound!

Good thing that Mom’s bedroom was far enough away so that she did not hear the commotion!  I was not sure how many cups had fallen so I proceeded to find and to pick them up off of the floor.  I counted them as I found them and thank goodness that they were plastic so there were no broken pieces to contend with.

I searched meticulously and as luck would have it, I found them all!  Just another moment in time!

More technology challenges: Facebook challenges

 

At the best of times there is always going to be a challenge for me when engaging with Facebook.  I will readily say that things have gotten easier for me and I am not sure if it is because I am using the mobile version of Facebook.

Sometimes I might get lost on a page but accessibility when using the mobile version is a lot easier as opposed to trying to use the regular version.

Sometimes it is a wee bit difficult to upload photos and I am not sure why.

Sometimes my team and I run into difficulty when dealing with posting to groups and keeping up with security restrictions.  However, I honestly do not think that it is any different for anyone else.  It does not really matter if one is sighted or vision-impaired.

No way to tell: No Braille on the microwave buttons

This is how it is at Mom’s home.  At my home I have a talking microwave but at her home there is no Braille and her microwave is not a talking one.

So I do not have the ability to warm things for myself or to use her microwave in any way. In short, I am unable to cook in her microwave.

This makes me feel quite out of sorts, so to speak!  And how can I rectify this?  I’ll suggest to Mom that I put some raised dots on her microwave the next time I visit.  It is not very hard to do but we shall see.

Another way to double check: Counting the notes

In order to ensure that I have received the correct number of notes when I visit the bank, I need to carefully count them to ensure that all is well.  In addition, I need to ensure that the notes do not stick together.  At the best of times, they do indeed stick together.

So, here is what I do!  I sit quietly.  Then I remove my notes from the envelope that contains them.  Then very slowly and meticulously, I begin my counting.  I make sure that my full attention is on this task and nothing else, for one misstep and I would have to return to the beginning and start all over again.

I do not think that this process is any different, whether or not one is sighted or vision-impaired.  The trick of the trade is all about devoting full attention.

RIP David: He was my hero

 I can only describe the late David Onley as one who walked softly and carried a big stick.  I had the privilege of meeting him twice in my life but always followed him on social media.  I sought his advice when I decided to form Barrier Free Canada and he so willingly gave it to me.

The last time I saw Mr. Onley was when we both appeared at a video session in front of the Senate Standing Committee.  We chatted freely and amiably and he was just so gentle, so generous, and so positive.

Then, when I had my coughing fit, he quietly exited the room and asked my friend to come in with some water for me. Thank you, Mr. Onley, for having walked into my life!  RIP.

Memories in my memory bank forever! What of my Primary School memories?

For the most part, my Primary School memories were filled with happy times and positive playtime.  Each of my teachers played an important part in helping to shape my life.  They all cared in their own way.  They shared their knowledge so willingly and were never afraid to mildly scold whenever it was necessary.

At the end of the day I consider myself to be very fortunate that I had the privilege of attending my Primary School.  No dream was ever limited and there were no boundaries to possibilities.  Teachers went way beyond the call of duty.  They supported, assisted, and were always close at hand.

Of course, there were some uneasy moments for me but I always considered this to be part of growing up.  I always wanted to learn and fit in and for the most part I accomplished all of this plus a lot more.  Most of all, I cherished those experiences, moments, and memories of getting ready for the Christmas concerts, games day every last Friday of the month, cooking classes, and those religious classes with Mrs. Jilks and Mr. Connor! Thank you, teachers!

My dearest grade school teacher! Remembering my favourite Mrs. Mauns

Ah yes!  She was one of my favourite teachers!  She was always there for me when I attended Primary School.  She helped to mold me. She made me smile almost every day and she was always there to protect me, share positive thinking, but most of all?  She helped me to develop an attitude to think outside the box!

Mrs. Mauns was everything that any child could ask for in a teacher!  Patient to the end was what she was.  Innovative, entertaining, and always there to guide, advise, mildly scold and so much more!

Hard to know! Why is Rico crying?

It never fails!  It is almost always difficult to determine why Mom’s adopted cat Rico is crying!  ! I have been told that cats cry for almost everything.  When they are happy, or when they greet someone they like.  Or it could even be when they wish to share in someone’s food!

Rico cries often!  His cries are loud and persistent and he cries at any time of the day!  Rico is not the friendliest of cats but I love him, nevertheless!

Frustrating times! Losing cable

 I guess that most of us take it for granted that our cable will always be there for us but I have learned the hard way that my cable service should never be taken for granted.  No!  I am extremely fortunate to have cable service in the first place because there are literally millions in this world who do not have this luxury.

It feels like having one of my fingers removed whenever cable service goes!   My home goes very quiet because my TV stands waiting for cable service to return.  Most of the time it returns quickly but there are times when it goes off for hours.  

I often smile to myself when I think of the good old radio that never fails me.  It is always there for me, whereas with cable!  Well, I must be thankful for cable service!

Cherished memories forever! So long to the Christmas tree for another year

If anything, my beloved Christmas tree is one of the few constants in my life.  Or should I clarify by saying that it is Mom’s Christmas tree!  Each year Mom and I take great pains to fetch her beloved treasure from a shelf high up in her storage cupboard.  I climb onto a chair and then I gingerly remove the somewhat heavy box and then hand it down to her waiting hands.  Then together we walk to the designated spot on her counter where the Christmas tree will stand until after the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6.

Mom is very firm on where she wants her beloved Christmas tree to stand.  It sure is a beautiful work of art that she bought so many years ago and she turns it on almost every day during the Christmas holiday season.  Visitors to her home continue to admire it.

I am always very sad whenever the time comes to remove it and put it away but that’s life, and as I say to myself, it’s all in a day’s work.
