They bring me so much joy! Those wonderful orchids

 

I have been tenderly looking after these wonderful types of flowers for several years now and when I had enough vision, I always enjoyed admiring their natural beauty.

I normally place them on the window of my living room as they really seem to thrive there.  Almost every day I make it my duty to visit them.  I touch them very lightly, say hello to them, and make sure that they are not wanting for water.

They are very easy for me to look after and when I am not around my trusted Super, Nick, is there to fill in for me.

It was about time! Cleaning out my office

 

This was a task that required me to be quite a bit more careful than when I cleaned out my clothes closet, and why?

Because in the case of my office I needed to discard the most appropriate documents, making sure that I did not throw out my most recent ones. My file folders have always been meticulously arranged but I still needed to make sure and labeling in Braille sure helped.

In the case of the unwanted equipment, this was much easier as I had a good idea what I needed and wanted to discard.

I did not do this chore for several years so it was quite interesting to see what I needed to discard.

So, now all that is left is for Mom to help me rearrange the photos and certificates on my wall.

It had to be done! Cleaning out my clothes closet

 

This has been an annual event for me and has taken place at the Canadian Thanksgiving time.  However, with Covid I had to put it on hold.

I’m back now and in 2022 I did more than just a clothes closet clean out!  I extended it to my office and, after all was said and done, I got rid of 9 boxes that included clothes, papers, and some old office equipment.

I have usually done this with Mom but for this grand event she was not with me.  So, I had to make darn sure that I was discarding the clothes that I really wanted to discard and not otherwise.

Thank goodness that I have always arranged my clothes closet very meticulously so as to know which clothes I am putting my hands on at any given time.  This made it easier for me and things went very smoothly.

In the case of my office discards, same thing here and all together it took me two weekends to complete the job.

A necessary evil! Ordering online

For me, I see two sides to this.  For the one thing, it is very convenient and it is fast.  However, whenever the website in question is not very accessible for me as a blind/vision-impaired person, then here is where I become very anxious and unhappy.

If I am unable to navigate the website because it is too complicated to do so, or I am having difficulty using it, then I just give up and choose to use my trusted telephone to call and order. I am not the only one in this boat. Many seniors who did not grow up with technology feel the same way and then you have the technically shy and those with other types of disabilities that prevent them from taking advantage of the ordering online option.

My favourite time of the year: Another fall season

 

A memory:
Oh, yes, and fall 2022!  Nothing too much will change for this season except that I have to do some additional work at the office to get things ready for 2023.  I’ll continue to enjoy the cool weather, my pottery and my knitting, and as always to look to the Christmas season for 2022.

Thus far, the weather is not too bad; a bit of this and a bit of that.  From pleasant warm days to cooler ones.

Fall is probably my favourite season.  Followed by spring, then winter, then summer.

My two worlds: Sand and snow

 

I have to admit that I really enjoy both of these and they sure help me to keep my seasons straight.

As a blind/vision-impaired person, I still do not have any preferences.  I love the feel of nice cool sand under my fingertips and under my toes.  I love the feel of its grains and I truly appreciate the different textures of sand.  

I can make all kinds of things with sand: castles, mountains, sand cakes, bridges, and I can even carve those water pools in the sand.  Working with sand brings me so many possibilities to create and I simply allow my mind to take over and lead me hither and thither.    From sand walls to abstract sand shapes and from little houses to sand trucks and little dolls and boxes and fortresses!

In the case of snow, I love the cold soft touch of it.  I enjoy walking in it and making snow balls.  I thoroughly enjoy those gentle snowflakes falling down my cheeks and gathering on the tip of my nose.

I just love to dig my boots into the snow and to create large holes.  I love bending over and gathering the fluffy stuff in my hands and I simply love to try and gather snowflakes in my hands.

Ah, yes!  Sand and snow!  Two different things to enjoy!

Passing down to others! Lessons for a lifetime

It is the best way that I can describe this day: the funeral proceedings of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  A lady who will go down in history for so many things!  Fortitude, courage, commitment, dedication, poise, and someone who took her role so very seriously.  

When it came to family matters, she had so much to deal with and she did just that with style and grace.  Her role as Queen of England may have been that as a figurehead and/or a rubber stamp but she was admired by so many world leaders.  She never complained and she never explained.

Rest in peace,Your Majesty.

A day in history to remember: Watching the funeral by myself

 

And what a momentous day it was as I sat there all by myself listening to the funeral proceedings of Her Majesty.  Thank goodness that the commentary descriptions were so very well announced that I could easily follow along.

I watched from beginning to end and after it was all over I felt so very exhausted but happy that I could be a witness to a part of history.  I can only hope that those younger than me could appreciate this day for what it was: a day to remember, a very historic day, and one to take away and to remember for a very long time.

An interesting experience: The CATSA video

 A few months ago, I had the privilege and pleasure of having participated in the making of a training video for the Canadian Air Transportation Agency also known as CATSA.  It was refreshing and very interesting to see that this specific agency was going the extra mile to develop training videos for its staff so that they could better service Canadians with disabilities.

These days not many agencies and departments are really going out of their way to improve services to Canadians with disabilities and hopefully this will change as we go along.

She is special! My new knitting teacher

She is like a breeze in a bottle!  Refreshing, patient, positive, and so very willing to work with me.  

I had no difficulty telling Susan how frustrated I was with myself because I was still having problems with my stitches: making sure that I was not knitting double stitches or dropping stitches.

Susan is definitely going to help me avoid these types of errors and we have already defined my first projects.  To work on a baby blanket.  She is eager and extremely entertaining.  I am a very lucky lady!

I am very pleased: Pottery resumed

 I sure enjoyed meeting my new pottery teacher after having had to wait for such a long time.  I was sorry to see Sister Helen go but Sean is going to work out just fine for me.

Sean is very upbeat, positive, and extremely welcoming and friendly.  The studio is arranged so very nicely and extremely accessible for blind/vision-impaired pottery students.  

I am really looking forward to creating  new and imaginative things.  I like Sean’s approach and attitude and the only way that I can describe it all is to say that the sky will be whatever I make it out to be.

So long Your Majesty! The queen is gone

 

Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II, is probably one of the only constants that I have ever known in my life except for my mom.  And truth be told, we all need to have at least one constant in our lives.  

For me, she was already on the throne when I was born and now she is gone.  I feel very fortunate that I was one of those to have received an award from her before she left us.  This being the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee award.  I am extremely humbled and privileged and I shall forever cherish the certificate and Jubilee pin that I received in honour of this!

I can still remember what Her Majesty looked like and in my mind’s eye her infamous hats will always be embedded in my memory!

Rest in Peace, Elizabeth II!

What a mess! When the ginger slices fell

Yes, I heard when the container of ginger slices fell and then the fun began.  The lid came loose and clattered around on the floor.  Then, some of the ginger slices spilled out of the jar.

I managed to find the lid but locating the ginger slices was another story.  They scattered themselves around and I had to spend several minutes finding them.  The worst part is that they left ginger crystals on my floor and I had to get down on all fours with my hand broom to sweep them up.  

Even so, I had to repeat this process a few more times before I cleaned everything up.

Must be cautious: Being careful in my tub

 

I am no different when it comes to being careful in my tub.  Sighted or not, we all need to be careful when moving around in our tubs.  

For me, I do not have any railings in my tub so I need to be super careful when getting in and out of my tub.  I take my time in both instances.  I place the palm of my hands on the tiled wall when getting in and out and I always make sure that the floor of my tub is free of soap.  For one missed step and I’d certainly be in a lot of trouble.

So, let us all just be careful in our tubs.

A delightful day! Meeting Helena and Wil after all these years

 What a refreshing and enjoyable day it was for me.  Two very special and wonderful folks.  The first two people that I met when I moved to Toronto from Montreal.

Yes, indeed, their voices sounded the same and their warmth and welcoming manner was what I remembered after all of these years.  For me, as someone who is blind/vision-impaired, this is so very important as it reconfirms familiarity.  

I remembered their home and did not have any difficulty finding my way around.  The smells of the kitchen were the same familiar ones and the couch felt oh so familiar to me.

I am just so glad that we have reconnected!  And as they say, good friends are like good wine!  They grow on you and they last forever.
