This is probably one of my very most cherished memories, a picture of Dad's radiogram all lit up at night whenever he sat in his chair listening to foreign stations. And there I was, lying on his bed listening along with him.
The reception was loud and clear. The screen was always lit up and I guess that it showed all kinds of nifty things but I could not see it. Yet, there was something there that always attracted me. Maybe it was the brightly coloured lights that adorned the screen.
Dad loved to listen to the Voice of America and he even went further afield to find European stations and our very own local stations. There were so many knobs at the front of the radiogram that navigated how to control the reception, how to find the various stations, and how to switch from local to
shortwave.
As I write this I can still picture this handsome looking piece of furniture for this is what it was. Stately looking, with a cabinet that housed a tape recorder and a record player. Then there was the radio gram with its knobs and screen. The top of the radio gram was large enough for Mom to place vases of flowers, both real and artificial, on the top of it and the entire radiogram stood on magnificent sturdy legs.
These were my memories, childhood memories that still linger on in my mind. Memories of a magnificent radiogram that played records, recorded us as kids, but most of all a shortwave radio that could reach so many parts of the world.
