A huge shock: When I discovered...

And it was quite a discovery. I was dusting my dining table and chairs soon after I had a visitor and I happened to place my hands below the seat of the chair where my visitor had been sitting and, oh no! To my chagrin it was broken!

I checked a few times to reassure myself that I was correct and alas! My poor chair was broken. The seat was split. Now I had to find someone to fix it.

Thank goodness for Nick who gave me the name of a wonderful furniture man who fixed it for me. I guess that it never ends but all's well that ends well.

A summertime activity: Continuing to visit my plants

They are so very special to me and almost every morning, at around 5 a.m., I venture onto my balcony to have a short visit with them.

I talk with them, fondle their leaves and flowers, and make sure that they have enough water. I stay with them for a few minutes and then I leave them for the day.

This is how I started almost every day and a visit to my plants is a must for me. I knew that come the end of October or early November they will start to wither because of the oncoming cold weather. But this is how it is going to be and all I can do is to be grateful for the joy that they have brought me for spring and summer, 2020.

A huge disappointment: When the Hawaiian globe broke

This poor old globe had traveled with me all the way from Hawaii back to Toronto. I had purchased it on my Hawaiian trip in February, 2020, but now I am afraid that it is history.

I had no idea that it would break so very easily. I had picked it up from my table, held it gently in my hands, and then had put it back down on the table. About a minute later and voila! I realized that it was broken.

First I smelled something different and next there was sticky stuff forming into a tiny puddle at the end of my table.

I am just grateful that Shane was nearby to help me clean up and he made very sure that there were no stains left. What a disappointment! My only memento of that wonderful trip.

Continued frustrations: My Apple exam

There are exams and then there are exams. If I were to categorize my Apple certification exam, which I wrote on August 4, 2020, I would say that it was probably one of the most stressful but at the same time interesting of all!

From the start, this exam was never meant to be a smooth one but Shane was absolutely superb in ensuring that I had the best chance to succeed and succeed I did!

This exam was not accessible for a vision-impaired person. The developers of Apple's exams are still very much behind when it comes to accessibility and they do not seem to fully understand.

My first interaction with Apple exams was two years ago in 2018 and nothing much has changed since then. Several questions are difficult to understand for someone who is vision-impaired and requires sighted assistance to navigate and describe.

Additional time for a person with a disability to write is offered, but alas! At the end of regular time one is kicked out of the exam and is unable to re-enter to complete the exam.

Hopefully these glitches will be rectified in the near future and I look forward to working with Apple and the administrators of their exams to make things more accessible.

Wonderful folks! At the hairdresser during the pandemic

They are extremely careful and they continue to be so very friendly and upbeat. I really admire their spirit at this very difficult time!

There is Nadia the owner, Lela my hairdresser, and Sophie my other hairdresser. They go about their business so very efficiently. They make sure that I am masked throughout the entire time and they also wear their protective gear.

Conversation is lively, laughter is rich, and the overall atmosphere is one of complete togetherness.  They guide me effortlessly to the area where my hair is washed, to the chair to have my hair cut, and finally to the cash area to pay my bill.

I wish these wonderful ladies continued luck and success!

She has certainly made an impression! My orchid the star

She came to live with me in mid June and she has quickly established herself as a bright star in my home. The moment that Stephanie introduced her to me, I knew that she would be mine!

After taking but a few seconds to inspect her and after Stephanie described her to me, I knew that she had to go home with me and so she did!

Sandra and Stephanie have taken several photos of her and I have sent them to Gayle so that she could show them to Mom so that she could see her, my star.

My orchid is a star! She is tall, slender, and of a deep purple colour. Even Nick likes her, saying how wonderful she is.

She has been blooming ever since she arrived! What a lovely orchid she is! Does not matter that I am unable to see her! It's enough for me to just touch her! That's my orchid!

The new reality: Challenges of pandemic shopping

It's all about ensuring that I social distance correctly, wear a mask, and make sure that I do not touch public surfaces as best as I can.

This is where my friend Stephanie comes in. She is careful and so very helpful. She is alert and makes sure that I am always protected. She is constantly watchful and making sure that my social distancing is just right.

She does not allow me to touch surfaces if I don't have to and she even helps me to tap my credit card at the cash register. Stephanie also helps me to use cash for my purchases and I could go on and on but I think that you have the picture now.

The trick for me is to ensure that at all times during this difficult time, I have sighted assistance to keep me safe.

My careful Doctor Cory: Visiting the dentist during the pandemic

I can honestly say that I was not overly concerned or nervous when I visited Doctor Cory, my wonderful dentist, to have some work done. All of the safeguards were in place when Sue and I walked in for our first appointment and Arlene had asked all of the stipulated questions before my appointment.

Doctor Cory and his assistant were so very careful, all gowned and masked, and so very considerate in explaining everything to me. As a vision-impaired person, I really depend on those around me to explain, assist, and for me to trust them all the way.

This was the case and I am sure that this helped to make the appointment a good and smooth one.

Thank God for my rescuers: When the key failed to turn

Oh my! What a moment but thank God my dear neighbour Sandra was there to the rescue. I really do not know what I would have done if she had not been around.

One of the locks on my condo's door had been problematic for quite some time now but on this fateful day it gave up the ghost and the key failed to turn.

So, with my lunch in hand, which included a drink, I knocked at Sandra's door and she answered. Sandra was so very helpful. She took my lunch from my hand and placed it on her dining room table and then she called the management office.

Jennifer from the management office came up right away and soon our Super, Nick, was on the scene. He sprayed my lock and that worked like a charm. Soon the key was turning smoothly.

I could have been in huge difficulty were it not for Sandra's assistance and then Jennifer and Nick. For me, as a vision- impaired person, I need to ensure that I make provisions for any type of eventuality that I can easily foresee. It may not always be possible but I need to keep on top of things as best as I can.

This could have happened to anyone, but when you are unable to use your sense of sight to help yourself, then here is where good neighbours and friends are so very important.

A welcome relief: My new TV

She is slimmer and fits very nicely into my cabinet, but alas! Her speakers are tiny and as a result the sounds coming out of them are very thin and a bit weak.

I have had to buy a sound bar to enhance the sounds and this has helped greatly. I even noticed that there was a difference in voices before I put in the sound bar.

I even had difficulty recognizing some of the voices of newscasters.

All's well that ends well.

Thanks to Nick and his friend the sound bar now works.

Hard to do without vision: Brightening up my kitchen

I can no longer tell the difference as to whether or not my kitchen is bright. That is, I cannot tell if the lights are all working. So, when my Super, Nick, noticed that some of the lights were not working, I was only too happy to have him replace them for me.

The only indicator that I have to tell me whether or not most, if not all, of the lights are working is based on the loudness of my bird clock. My bird clock depends on light to emit its bird sounds.

If light shines on the face of my bird clock then its sounds can be heard. But if there is no light then it remains quiet.

I do thank Nick for having helped to brighten up my kitchen.

Relief! When my old TV died

She had been struggling for a few years now but when she finally gave up the ghost I had to ask my Super, Nick, to confirm it for me.

My poor old TV had simply refused to start up and no matter how much I coaxed her that fateful morning, she just did not wake up.

Mom and I previously thought that it was our cable box, but alas! It was the poor old TV just struggling to stay alive.

So, Nick took her away and that was the final time for TV and me.
