Anticipation awaits! Getting ready to play in the sand

Oh, how I dream of being able to play in the sand!  To dig my toes into the cool sand!  To pick up thousands of grains in my hands and then to let it trickle through my fingers.

To build sand castles, dig pools and shape them into all kinds of different things.  To build mountains, houses, forts, and so much more!

And while I am sand-building, the sun shines down on me bringing warmth and enjoyment to me.  Ah, yes!  Playing in the sand!

My two worlds: Sand and snow

I have to admit that I really enjoy both of these and they sure help me to keep my seasons straight.

As a blind/vision-impaired person, I still do not have any preferences.  I love the feel of nice cool sand under my fingertips and under my toes.  I love the feel of its grains and I truly appreciate the different textures of sand.

I can make all kinds of things with sand: castles, mountains, sand cakes, bridges, and I can even carve those water pools in the sand.  Working with sand brings me so many possibilities to create and I simply allow my mind to take over and lead me hither and thither.    From sand walls to abstract sand shapes and from little houses to sand trucks and little dolls and boxes and fortresses!

In the case of snow, I love the cold soft touch of it.  I enjoy walking in it and making snow balls.  I thoroughly enjoy those gentle snowflakes falling down my cheeks and gathering on the tip of my nose.

I just love to dig my boots into the snow and to create large holes.  I love bending over and gathering the fluffy stuff in my hands and I simply love to try and gather snowflakes in my hands.

Ah, yes!  Sand and snow!  Two different things to enjoy!

My beloved sand castles

This was always one of my favorite family things to do: building sand castles whenever we were at the beach. I would say that it was Granny and Dad who really showed me how to build these and boy did I have fun doing it. Then the brothers and cousins joined in and we used to have competitions to see who could build the biggest and nicest ones.

I don't think that I ever expected to win the competitions; all I ever wanted to do was to use my imagination to create shapes of all kinds and sizes. Castles of all shapes and sizes and anything and everything else. I would even create my own inventions and hold them in my hand or just simply build them on the surface of the lovely sand.

Sometimes castles turned into mountains or at other times they turned into houses. What joy it was for me and I shall never forget!

This is a personal message from author Donna Jodhan
"If you either are or have been a victim of crime, violence, abuse, or bullying, and if you are simply tired of being bombarded with audios and scenes of the above, then I am asking for your support. I have written and recorded audio mysteries that are completely void of vivid descriptions of sex, crime, and violence because I firmly believe that it is time for us to use the spoken word to help influence our kids to start listening to content that is clean and healthy. By doing this we can all do our part to tackle crime in a positive and meaningful way and it only costs pennies per day. Visit my online store at www.donnajodhan.com/store.html.
I thank you and your kids will also thank you!"

At the Beach with Mom

This is one of my most enjoyable times; going on a beach vacation with my mom.  We have so much fun and she is literally my eyes.  She helps me to negotiate buffets, crowded areas, hotel lobbies, and so on.

She describes so much to me; the scenery around us, people passing and walking, and the activity on the beach.  We have so much fun together and she is never tired of describing, explaining, and helping.  Some may say that this is all in a day's work for her because she is mom; but I never take anything for granted.  Mom is my eyes!  My guide!  My best friend!

When we walk on the beach I kick my memory into high gear and imagine that I can see the rolling waves, the soft golden sand, the cloudless skies, plus more.  I bring swaying trees into my mind's eye.  Then I expand the picture with boats, surfers, and swimmers.  Then I finish off the picture with sand castles, shells lying lazily on the beach, and sun tanners.  O boy!  What a joy!

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and inviting you to come and explore the world through the eyes of a blind person.
