Something new: Becoming familiar with a new buffet

As for me, when it comes to buffets it all depends on who is assisting me. I always have an idea which friend to ask when attending a buffet.

When it is a new buffet it is important for me to make sure that the right person with me.

Each friend or family member does things differently for me and I just need to ensure that I am able to adjust.
It is always a new learning experience when attending a buffet.

Never a dull day: New experiences

I can only describe it like this. Each time I visit Mom and stay with her for a while, the experiences are each new, unique, and filled with so much learning.

Mom and I have never really discussed her inner feelings since she fell in June, 2023, and I recognize that this must be so very trying and tormenting for her.  However, she has borne it all with dignity, patience, and a positive outlook.

She is always so very pleasant when she wakes up in the mornings, looking forward to the day ahead.
She accepts her limitations each night before she goes to bed.
She prays all of the time and this is what keeps her going.

Yes, that’s my Mom!

New adventures: Assisting Mom with a new task

It is always such a privilege and pleasure whenever I get to assist my precious Mom with a new task.
It could be anything from doing the laundry to helping her in her garden.
It could be helping her to retrieve her dresses or help to pack things in her cupboards.
It could be anything from helping to fetch things from her fridge or freezer.
It could be anything from helping her when she decides to do some cooking.

So much to help Mom with and never a dull moment. We work together and we laugh together!
She uses her walker so very well.

Irritants: Those feisty lizards

These stubborn little critters are not just stubborn!  They are very bold, persistent, and have no problem pestering anyone and everyone around them.

They come out mainly at night and make irritating noises. In order to stop them I either shout at them , raise my hands, or clap loudly. They stop immediately but here is the problem! They resume their noisy irritation after a few minutes.

What to do? I am still thinking.

A fulfilling experience: The stand-in care giver

That’s another name that I have given to myself. Whenever any of Mom’s care givers are unavailable, Donna the care giver is ready.

I help Mom with whatever she needs to retrieve. I help her with the laundry and I am her assistant whenever she desires to cook.

I enjoy it all but I know that it is just for a short time. I love fetching her newspapers, putting away her tray table, fetching her pills, and oh yes!  Sharing snacks with her!

Careful as she goes: Emptying the water bucket

All that I can say is, easy as she goes. The water bucket at Mom’s home is being used to collect water whenever Mom’s ceiling leaks after a rain shower. So, here is how I conduct my business.

I place my slippers directly in front of the bucket to accurately mark the spot where the bucket is. Then I carefully lift the bucket and walk slowly with it for emptying.

Next I return the bucket to its place making sure to place it in front of my slippers.

I am happy to report that this strategy works like a charm.

A funny moment: When the empty water bottle scared me

Looking back now I can only smile to myself. It was a lighter moment for me.

When I went to sit in my usual spot close to Mom’s chair, I heard something creak and felt something move! I scrambled out of my chair and stood still.

I started to ask Mom what was going on but soon realized that it was only an empty water bottle. What a laugh!

Challenging times: Wi-fi woes

These woes continue at Mom’s home. Whenever the Internet acts up then so does Mom’s TV.

We are both very patient and have become used to these bumps in the road.

I don’t think that there is very much that can be done whenever glitches occur.  Just best to go with the flow.

Limitless fun! Around the kitchen with Mom

My moments of roaming around the kitchen with Mom are absolutely priceless

I wait patiently for her to tell me that she wants to do something. Then she rises out of her chair and holding tightly to her walker, she moves quickly to her kitchen and there begins our adventures.

I follow very closely behind her and listen attentively as she gives me instructions. I go to the cupboards to fetch whatever she wants. I go into the fridge and the freezer to retrieve whatever she wishes. Then together we get things done.

Mom knows exactly what she wants to do and I am just the second in command. Her instructions are very clear and direct. I chop, wash dishes, hand her things, and stand close to her. I cut vegetables, retrieve utensils out of her drawers, and wipe down her island and her sink.

She toodles around with her walker and boy, oh boy is she ever very precise. Mom knows where everything is and is very determined to ensure that things are placed as she wants them to be. What a Mom!

Mom and I at work! Doing laundry with Mom

We now have this down to a routine.

Mom and I walk to her laundry room and there, before our adventure begins, I place our dresses in the washer’s tub.  I turn on the tap.

Then Mom turns on the washer. Next she pours the soap into the tub. All is ready for action.

We then go out onto her patio to sit and chat. After the laundry is finished we return to the laundry room and then together we remove the dresses from the washer.

We meticulously hang out the clothes and finally our adventure is complete. I am just happy to be a part of this very precious moment.

All is done after the dresses dry and then I remove them from their hangers and bring to Mom for her to fold neatly.

Comfy and cosy! My favourite little corner

Whenever I visit Mom I do, indeed, have a favourite little corner.

Each morning I sit in a rocking chair in her master bedroom and there I spend about half an hour, reading the prayers of the day, checking on my emails, then to the BBC news, CBC news, then to Facebook, and finally to check on my Canadiens hockey team.

I usually start my day at around 4 a.m. when the house is very quiet. I can hear the birds waking up and some of the workers preparing for the day.

I can smell some early cooking emanating from close by eateries and restaurants.

Oh, yes!  Just sitting in my favourite little corner to start my day!

A new experience: Ordering lunch at the mall

It is now the new way of ordering lunch at the mall.  It’s busy but orderly. The servers are quite friendly and we just need to ensure that we choose what we want to.

Things have really changed. Now with Mom and Moya going together and Gayle and I walking together. It used to be Mom and me but now that she needs a wheelchair to travel around, it is different.

It is still fun!  Everyone choosing and then we all sit down together at a nice big table to eat and chat.
