Confusion reigns! When noisy places challenge me

Yes, they sure do and I know that I am not the only one here.  The biggest challenge for me is that when I am unable to hear because my surroundings are super noisy, it sure affects my ability to navigate effectively, to engage, and to communicate.

As someone who is vision impaired, I depend almost exclusively on my sense of hearing and when noise affects my ability to hear then it is practically impossible to navigate, engage, and communicate.  Added to this is when masks are being worn and then combine this with a noisy environment then everything turns horrible.

Easy does it! Going carefully down the stairs

 

Oh, yes!  The steps at Mom’s home are steep and I need to be extra careful when descending. So, I hold onto the railings on both sides.  I go slowly and gingerly and before descending I make sure that Mom is at the bottom before I start my descent.

Mom taps her ring on the railing as she descends and she also shakes the railing and both of these strategies help me to know when she has reached the bottom.

Finally, she calls out to me.

Warm and fuzzy feelings: Reacquainting with Mom's home

This is probably one of the more enjoyable moments for me whenever I return to visit Mom.  Just to be able to re-familiarize myself with her space and then to discover the new things in her home.

Mom takes such pride in showing me the new things.  She goes to great lengths to show me around and to make sure that I know where she has put everything.

She is so very patient and is always happy to reacquaint me with the remotes for her televisions.  Then I need to get back on track with Carl, Rambo, and Vonnie!  

Such joy and such refreshing times!

Magic moments: Greeting Mom with my mask on

I guess that somehow, when I landed at the airport in November 2022 to visit Mom, my mask seemed to have hindered me from hearing when Mom approached.  I felt really foolish that I did not hear her approaching and only knew that she was there when she greeted me close up.

Alas!  As a vision-impaired person, I depend very heavily on my sense of hearing to help me navigate and stay in touch with my surroundings.  However, when I wear a mask I not only have difficulty hearing but I also have challenges to communicate.

So, what to do?  I guess that I need to pay even more attention!  I need to go the extra mile to stay on track!  My November 2022 moment at the airport proved this to me!

Not too bad this time: Shopping for a new keyboard

 Not one of my favourite things to do but it needs to be done from time to time.

Sometimes one is lucky to find a very helpful customer service rep but then again this is not always the case. And this is what happened on this particular day when I went to buy a new keyboard.

The first customer service rep seemed quite disinterested when I approached and asked for his assistance.  He simply said that they did not have what I was looking for but on the other hand the second customer service rep went out of his way to help.

I can only describe my twin experiences as night and day.

Scary times: When the phone lines failed me

This is yet another blatant example of how some companies deal with their customers.  That is, until you demand to speak with a supervisor.

In this case it was Bell Canada and I rose on this particular Sunday morning to discover that both my home and business lines were not working.  I emailed Susan, explained my situation, and she was soon at my door.

We phoned the Bell support line using her cell and explained what was going on.  We waited for two hours and when no one had either contacted us or had shown up we had to repeat the process to discover that our problem had not even been reported.  So we demanded to speak to a supervisor.

We had to repeat that I was vision impaired and that I needed urgent help.  Thank God that the supervisor was able to help immediately and within a half hour the problem was resolved.

So what does this tell me?  Demand to speak to a supervisor if I find that no one is listening!

Pleasant staff! At the vascular clinic

 

I can only describe this visit as a mixed bag at best.  For whereas I can only say good things about the staff and the technician, getting there and finding the clinic itself was another story.  All together, it was a long day and thank goodness that I had Stephanie to accompany me.

I always appreciate when medical staff are helpful and go above and beyond the call of duty to assist me as a vision-impaired person.  This clinic gets top marks from me for this.  The technician went out of her way to explain things to me as she went about her business.
