Teamwork at its best: Mom and I doing the laundry

We now have this down to a routine. Together we go to the laundry room. I put our dresses in the washer. Then I keep tabs on how many until we reach either five or six.

I turn on the tap and Mom puts in the laundry soap. I close the lid and then washing begins.

At the end of it all? I take the laundry out of the washer. Then Mom and I shake out the clothes and I put them on hangers and then hang them to dry.

The final stage comes when I gather up the clothes and bring them to Mom for her to sort into distinct piles and then neatly fold. Together we put them away in our respective cupboards.

Mom and I at work! Doing laundry with Mom

We now have this down to a routine.

Mom and I walk to her laundry room and there, before our adventure begins, I place our dresses in the washer’s tub.  I turn on the tap.

Then Mom turns on the washer. Next she pours the soap into the tub. All is ready for action.

We then go out onto her patio to sit and chat. After the laundry is finished we return to the laundry room and then together we remove the dresses from the washer.

We meticulously hang out the clothes and finally our adventure is complete. I am just happy to be a part of this very precious moment.

All is done after the dresses dry and then I remove them from their hangers and bring to Mom for her to fold neatly.

Hard to find at times: Those stray softener sheets

Call them my constant challenge.  This is what happens every time I do my laundry.

Whenever I take my laundry out of the dryer, I need to go hunting for the softener sheets.
Most times I can locate them but it takes me quite a few minutes to find them.
Then there are the times when I cannot find them and then I do, some days or even weeks later.

I need to create a strategy to find those elusive softener sheets but as of now I have no answer to their being missing in action.

A necessary technique: Saving soap

Just another technique to ensure that Mom saves soap.
Thanks to one of her care givers, whose name I’ll not disclose.
The technique is very simple, when dealing with liquid dish soap and liquid laundry soap.
Here’s what we do.
We fill a small bottle with a half measure of water.
Then we pour soap from the bigger bottle of pure soap.
We fill the smaller bottle completely.
We shake well and voila!
We now have a new bottle of concentrated soap!

A humorous moment: Pouring the wrong laundry detergent

Looking back at this now I can only smile to myself and it all has to do with the fact that I did not take time to do this one thing. You see, I just simply picked up a bottle assuming that it was the right bottle.

I opened it and without even taking time to sniff the contents I poured it. Normally, I usually sniff the contents and I never assume that I have the right bottle in hand.

Just me not being careful this time.

A laundry challenge: Finding the elusive static sheet

I can honestly say that doing laundry is often a bit of an event for me. Sometimes I need to go hunting for clothes that have dropped out of the dryer when I am unloading it.  Sometimes I inadvertently forget to take a piece of clothing out of the washer.  Then, sometimes, my socks get lost in the shuffle and I have to take time to find them.

The other day I had to add one new adventure to my laundry activities: searching for the elusive static sheet.  I had  put one of these sheets in my dryer among my clothes and after taking out the dried clothes, I then had to go looking for this static sheet.

I searched and searched; in my dryer, outside of the dryer, and on the carpet of my den where I had taken my clothes to fold.

Alas, it took days before I found it.  Lying on my carpet but some distance away from where I had folded my clothes.

Challenges of the day: Those pesky onion skins and stray Kleenex bits

They are probably two of the biggest irritants in my life these days. That is, when they fall to the floor and I am not aware.

In the case of the onion skins, I never know that they have made their unwelcomed way to the floor until I actually step on them. Then comes the task of picking them up and then to make sure that I have cleaned up any
accompanying juice.

In the case of those Kleenex bits: they grace my floor with their presence whenever they fall out of my pocket and purse and then somehow become bits. Or whenever they become part of my laundry in the dryer because I forgot to
take them out of my pocket before tossing my clothes in the washer.

Yes, they can sure be very irritating for me and there is no tried and proven solution except to be more careful whenever I deal with onions or Kleenex.

All in a day's work: My laundry day

For most of us laundry day could be thought of as anything from trying, challenging, and mundane to must be done or just another home task.

For me, it is a bit of everything.  First, I need to ensure that I am going to wash exactly what I do, indeed, wish to wash.  Next, to make sure that I put each piece of clothing into the washer when I am ready to do the laundry. I am now halfway there!

Then, when the washer has completed its job, I need to ensure that I take every piece of clothing out of the washer and place it into the dryer. This applies particularly to ensuring that I do not leave my socks behind.

Why is this?  Because of the small size of the socks and to ensure that my socks either do not fall on the floor or that they are not caught up in my sheets or some other larger piece of clothing.

Now comes the dryer, and after ensuring that every piece of clothing is in the dryer, I close the door and turn it on.

Finally, I need to ensure that when I empty my dryer that I don’t leave anything behind in the dryer or that I don’t leave any piece of clothing on the floor.  This entails that I count each piece of clothing and make sure that everything is accounted for.

That’s my laundry day.

Doing the Laundry Carefully

When I do my laundry, it's really not that much different from what most sighted persons would do.  I use my color detector to help sort my colored clothes from my white clothes.  Next I wash the white ones separately from the colored ones.  All hand clothing is washed by hand and the rest go into the washer.

The trick for me is to be able to tell if a piece of clothing has run as they say; creating a disaster for other pieces of clothing.  So, I have to make sure that certain pieces of clothing can be washed together and those that can't I have to wash also by hand.  Not much different from what sighted persons would do.

I am fairly comfortable doing my laundry.  Towels and sheets go together, jeans, sweat shirts, socks, and track clothes go together, miscellaneous go together, and all of my blouses and skirts and other delicate garments are washed separately and apart from each other.  The challenges for me are:  Making sure that stains have been removed, and realizing when something is a bit too worn to keep on using.  So, I use the tried and proven method of discarding anything that has become thin and thread bare.

Not much different from the sighted world but I have to depend on touch as well as sighted assistance to help me deal with stains and o yes!  When those darn socks drop from me when I remove them from the dryer.  When they drop without a sound and I have to go looking for them.

Dealing with buttons on washers and dryers is another story which I will cover in another blog.  For now, you can learn more about color detectors by visiting www.independentlivingaids.com.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and encouraging you to go out there and help educate the sighted world about how blind persons do their laundry.
