Must be more careful! Re-checking printed documents

There are no two ways about this one and as a vision-impaired person, it is a must.
What am I saying? Just this!

Each time I print a document I need to use my scanner to ensure that there is printed text on the page. If I don’t then there will always be a chance that I can give a blank page to someone sighted. Just for me to avoid some embarrassment.

The new gadget in town: The new water pick

Oh boy, did I ever have fun with this new gadget! Stephie showed me how to use it and after having had some water splash all over me, I got it!

It is always a bit of a learning curve and requires a bit of patience whenever I purchase a new gadget. Learning is lots of fun but I need to pack my patience. Once I get the hang of things, everything else comes easy.

We never know! Unexpected changes

At the best of times, unexpected change is always very challenging to negotiate. But for me, as a vision-impaired person, I find it even more of a challenge.

When Mom visited me in Toronto in 2023, I quickly realized that things had changed. And though I could have been a bit more prepared, it did catch me a bit off guard.

Mom had great difficulty walking. She was slower at moving about. She was more anxious when she encountered certain situations. However, when it came to her mindset and mental capacity, nothing much had changed there.

I simply had to adjust to the new physical limitations for my mom. I took a deep breath and voila!  All was good. My vision impairment did not matter at the end of the day. Mom and I were still team A!

Easy as she goes: Packing carefully

Those travel tubes/cubes are a real bonus when it comes to my packing carefully. I previously referred to them as tubes but in actuality they are known as travel cubes.

Now I can organize things more logically.
Yes!  Tops go into one cube.  Underwear go into their own cube.
Then sleepwear goes into another cube.
I think that you get the point.

Thank goodness for these new wonders.

Much faster and more efficient: Identifying the cubes

These are my newest traveling friends, so to speak! Those nifty cubes that help me to keep my clothes in order in my suitcase when I travel.

Actually, cubes does not really describe what I am referring to here. They are made of very sturdy or durable nylon. They are well sized bags with double zippers. They are transparent so that a sighted traveler can see what the contents are. For me, I just need to remember the contents of each so-called tube.

A new addition to my technology: My sound bar

It never fails! Every time those technicians visit my home to conduct updates, they never leave without having damaged something or other. This time it was my sound bar.

The technician damaged it when he was moving things around and I had to go out and buy a new one. Thank goodness that the company compensated me for the expense.

My new sound bar is much better. The audio output is really good so at the end of the day I can say that everything happens for a reason as the new sound bar is much better than the previous one.

More than just an annoyance: When technicians fail to put back

And here again is yet another big challenge for me. I know that technicians are mainly focused on fixing a problem and in so doing they simply forget to put things back where they found them.

Or, they do not put the new replacements in the spot where they removed the old ones.

Or even more, they move a piece of furniture and do not put it back.

All of this happened when the Cable company’s technician came to my condo to work on my problem. They never replaced things in the right spot. They did not put back my furniture and I went crashing into my dresser.

What to do? I am just not sure as most of them simply ignore me.

Persistent hunting: Finding the missing pen

As a vision-impaired person, one of the biggest challenges for me is when someone does not put things back in the place where they found them. This is what happened a while ago when someone borrowed my pen and after they left I could not find it.

So, with a deep breath I devised a little strategy. I retraced my steps and tracked every place where this person was seated. It worked like a charm!

I found my pen exactly where they had been sitting.

A lighter moment : When the rain soaked my plants

Oh boy, and what a mess! I had to exercise all of my patience to deal with this.

I had gone out on my balcony to water my plants and good thing that I had the presence of mind to check before pouring water into them.

The rain had come down and soaked my beloved plants; even over soaking them. Plus there was water on the floor of the balcony.

I will say that, as a vision-impaired person, it is vitally important to use my fingers to check on things before proceeding.

I decided to just leave the water to subside in the soil of my plants as it would have been too difficult for me to remove the water.

Just another challenge! Switching to a new cable box

This is what happened a few months ago when my cable company switched to a new cable box. I had to learn how to navigate my box. I had to learn how to use the new remote.

Thank goodness that this new remote enables me to input my channel changes via voice.

The technician was helpful and then I had Sandra and Nick and Susan to complete my familiarization.

My teacher, thanks Mom! Spread out your signature

Looking back at this now, I can only smile when Mom gently made this comment to me. She did so when Richard and Jane visited to have her and me sign some documents.

Mom sat close by and watched carefully as I signed. Then, as I was signing, she told me to “spread out your signature.” Wise words from a wise Mom!

I need to communicate! No electronic documents for me?

And I need to find a way to make others aware that in order to communicate productively and successfully, I need to be able to send and receive my documents electronically. Some folks definitely understand but then there are those who have no clue why I am requesting this.

Surely, the world of technology has now reached and surpassed the point where there is not any problem or difficulty to produce electronic documents? So what is the problem here?

Let’s work to promote more awareness for using electronic documents.
