More technology for me! The WordPress environment

Yes, and it appears that WordPress is here to stay.  For me, it is a necessary evil and I am very fortunate that I am surrounded by very supportive and knowledgeable technicians and others.  For if I were left on my own I would surely sink.

This is probably one of the necessary evils for me as a vision-impaired person:  the continuing changes to our technical world.  I can barely keep up at times but this is what it is.

Great anticipation! Getting ready for the SRUTT course

 This is going to be a very important course for me as hopefully it will help to enhance and solidify my Screen Reader User Testing and Trainer knowledge.  I have always wanted to do this as this is the point at which I started my career in the accessibility field so many years ago.

I am looking forward to meeting my classmates and to working with Nick and his team of instructors.  I am very fortunate, lucky, and privileged that I’ll be taking this course.

The Carroll Center For The Blind is a very prestigious training center in the US and I’ll be the first Canadian to be taking this course.

Frustrating and annoying: At the dentist office with Mom

 It often horrifies me how much the medical profession lacks when it comes to being able to engage and communicate in a meaningful manner with blind and vision-impaired patients.  And this is what happened a few months ago when I accompanied Mom to her dentist.

In these modern times, we still have receptionists and admin staff who either refuse or hesitate to communicate with those of us who are blind and/or vision-impaired or they simply disregard our presence.  We even have doctors and nurses who are unable to communicate with us.  In short, they look upon us as either unable to understand or to comprehend or that we are folks who need care givers and legal guardians to speak on our behalf.

What to do?  I invite you to give me your thoughts!

Covid still at work! The Red Lobster Restaurant still not crowded

Now that Covid has yielded ground, it is still easy to see that this once buzzing restaurant is still not very crowded.  Yes, staff are still very friendly and welcoming and yes!  The food is still yummy, but more expensive now.

I do not think that there is much more for the Red Lobster Restaurant to do but to keep on doing what they are doing.  For me, as a vision-impaired diner, my only beef is those inaccessible pin pads with screens that I am unable to independently navigate.

What would I do without my Metro? Metro the familiar

After all of these years, the Metro Supermarket remains such familiar grounds for Mom and me.  Metro is the fall back for me with all of its friendly staff and easy to find goods on the shelves.  The produce and meat sections are still very easy to navigate and the same for the freezer section.

I will respectfully submit that as someone with a vision impairment, it is so important for me to be able to navigate the aisles easily.  To find what I seek and to have staff who are always there to help and assist.  

For Mom as a senior it is so important that she, too, can obtain friendly help and assistance.

A new device! Learning the Envision glasses

 Yet another new piece of technology for me to learn and this time it is the Envision glasses.

This is a new way to interact with the printed world.  I need to spend more time doing this and to become more confident with it.  Thank goodness that the headquarters in the Netherlands are so very patient and friendly.

New opportunities: Using pottery to promote?

 

Thanks to my pottery instructor, Shaun, this is exactly what I am going to do.  I will be working with Shaun to use my pottery creations to promote my Dining With Donna show.

I started producing podcasts of my Dining With Donna show in September 2022 and thanks to my good friends Victor Gouveia, Shaun, and my trusty developer Aaron, it is all coming together.  

I’ll be selling on Etsy.  I’ll be offering spice pots and matching spoons, sets of dinner, bread, and sandwich plates and salad bowls. And most exciting: Christmas ornaments!

I can’t wait to see how this all goes for me!

New possibilities: Finding a new location

It is always very interesting and exciting whenever I need to find a new location to put or place things in my condo and even more exciting whenever Mom helps me to find said new location.

This normally happens whenever we work together to reorganize our condo and on her most recent visit to Canada she and I did just that.  We reorganized, found new locations for all kinds of things, and I was just so very pleased at the outcome.

It just shows that every now and then this needs to be done if we hope to keep things organized and looking good.  A new location also means that things are easy to find!

Easy as she goes! Being careful with Mom in the snow

 

When Mom visited me in Toronto in February to May 2023, there were several times when I had to ensure that I was super careful with her when walking in the snow.  Most of all to walk slowly, take small steps and to make sure that her balance was intact at all times.

It was not as difficult as you may think, with a vision-impaired person assisting a senior with balance problems and one with hearing challenges as well.  It all comes down to coordination, communication, and lots of positivity and patience.

It’s very easy for me as my mom possesses a wonderful attitude, and is always positive and cheerful!
