Card making
My dear friend, Denise Sanders, introduced me to this concept late in 2014 and since then I have purchased the cuttle bug along with the necessary cards, various packages of different stickers, and the folders with the various designs on them.
This is going to be a new concept for me and something new to try. I am looking forward to it and thus far Denise has been coaching me via phone all the way from Kelowna.
Card making is going to give me the chance to use my hands, my imagination, but most of all, the opportunity to make special cards for special folks. Can't wait to get started.
Ah yes! Card making! Something new for me to try. Something new to learn! A new way to use my hands and sense of touch.

Problems with Facebook
I have now become a regular visitor to Facebook but it has taken time for me to get used to this website. For the most part I use the mobile version because I find it easier to navigate and it appears to be more accessible to blind users.
Of course, no one should ever expect any website to be perfectly accessible. That would be asking for a pie in the sky dream. However, one can only hope that it is navigable enough.
There are still problems with Facebook but I must say that the problems are much less than they were about a year ago. I would say that one has to be patient and work towards finding ways to navigate Facebook. There are always going to be problems, but that's life.

When the bag spilled
Oh boy! What a problem this was for me the morning it happened. This time it was the bag to my vacuum cleaner but I can tell you that I have learned a great lesson.
It was my normal Saturday morning cleaning day and time for me to vacuum. I had taken out my vacuum cleaner and had just finished vacuuming. Then I had decided to empty the bag.
I started to do this as usual. I had removed the bag but somehow my hand slipped from the bag and lo and behold! The contents spilled helplessly onto my kitchen floor and there I was, left to clean it up all!
After swearing to myself for a few seconds, I stood up and went to fetch the hand broom and dust pan. Then with great care I returned to the spot where the spilled contents were and gingerly sat down on the floor. Then I found the spilled contents.
I placed the dust pan as close as I could to the pile of dust, then with brush in hand I gently pushed the dust into the dust pan. It took me a few minutes to ensure that I had gotten it all.
The good thing is that when the bag spilled, I was holding it in my hand as I sat on the floor. Because if it had fallen from my hand while I was standing, then who know what a bigger mess that would have been and even more difficult for me to clean up.
Lesson learned. Hold on to my bag more firmly the next time around.

When the steam cleaner quit on me
Yes, it did quit on me, and how did I know this? There were several indicators but once again my senses of smell and touch came to my assistance.
I had taken out my steam cleaner to clean my floors. I had filled it with water and detergent and had fitted everything into their proper and respective spots on the machine and then away I went.
I plugged in my machine and turned it on and then waited for it to start making the customary shushing sound but after about 30 seconds there was no shushing sound. I waited another 30 seconds and all I could hear was the dull sound of the machine as it vibrated.
Then it was time for me and my fingers to go investigating. I ran my fingers down the length of the machine and stopped at the water receptacle. It was hot but not overly hot. I continued down the length of the machine and inspected the rest of the components and all seemed well. I then decided to turn off the machine and then turn it back on.
Nothing happened at first. No shushing sound but then something caught my attention. The smell of something burning and that was it. Something was wrong with my poor old steam cleaner.
To confirm my suspicions I called my Super and as soon as he turned it back on he noticed a flashing light and this indicated that the power supply was not working properly. I was correct; my steam cleaner had quit on me. That's what you get when you can't see a flashing light and your other senses have to kick in to help out.
All's well that ends well.

When the smell of coffee saved me
Let's just say that, indeed!, the smell of coffee saved me that day. You see, I was wiping down my kitchen table after breakfast and it is a good thing that I was sufficiently alert and awake that morning.
As I wiped around the table with my damp cloth, I smelled the sweet fragrance of coffee and something told me to stop for a moment and feel around on the table and lo and behold! There it was! My half full cup of morning coffee.
It was not too close to the edge of the table but chances are more than good that had I not paid attention to the smell of coffee, I would surely have knocked it off the table, and then? A whole new chore for me to deal with: cleaning up a cup of spilled coffee and making sure that I got all of the liquid on the floor.
I guess that as a blind person, I need to make sure that I remember where I put things at all times. A difficult task you may be saying? Yes, but I need to do my best.

When the mop went missing
Looking back at this incident I can definitely smile at it now but at the time it sure gave me a run for my money. I have to admit that patience was the order of the day.
It started out with my taking out my mop and filling its bottle with water and mixing in some detergent in preparation for doing my mopping. It was shaping up to be a regular Saturday morning and time for house cleaning and everything seemed to be going well until it happened.
I placed my mop in a specific spot near the door to my bathroom and went to get a glass of water and as I was walking towards my kitchen, the phone started ringing.
It was my best friend calling me from Montreal and I spent about a half hour with her on the phone. Then when I put the phone down I returned to my cleaning chores, but alas! I could not find my mop.
I spent the next 15 minutes searching high and low for it. I looked everywhere trying to retrace my steps but no luck. Then just like that! I literally stumbled upon it.
As far as I could piece things together, here is what I think happened. I simply forgot where I put it and then when I went looking for it after my phone call I must have searched in the right spot but each time I felt around I kept missing the good old mop standing there waiting for me to find it.
A lesson in frustration and patience but at the end of the day all worked out to my relief.

Fishes in the fountain
I was never really able to see them but I sure used my imagination to pretend that I did. There were all kinds of fishes, from the pretty gold ones to the sizable fresh water sharks and many in between.
Maybe at one time I was able to barely see them but I depended on Mom to describe them to me. I could just imagine them swimming around, leaping into the air, and racing each other around in the fountain.
At one time I was able to see ducks and geese swimming in the lakes if I drew close enough to the edge but I don't think that I could do the same for the fishes. Still, however, I always enjoyed standing close to the edge of the fountain and imagining that I did. Ah, yes! Fishes in the fountain!

My beloved Tragarete Rd.
This is where I spent my early childhood years, living on Tragarete Rd. with my family, and they were some of the happiest days for me. Whenever I want to dip into my memory bank for childhood memories, this is the one that often pops up for me.
The sights, sounds, and smells will always remain with me until I travel to the next world. Standing on my balcony and looking down at the passing cars. Taking in the sweet odors around me, and listening to people chatting among themselves as they walked by.
I can still remember the yummy smell of baking bread, popcorn popping, food cooking, and the fragrant combinations of perfumes wafting up at me from those walking by on the sidewalks. I can still hear the sounds of laughter, whistling, chatter, and music coming out of passing cars.
Then there were the barking dogs, the occasional cussing and swearing, and the drunken man going slowly home late at night. Then there were the revelers coming out of clubs at around midnight. At carnival time there were the sweet sounds of the steel pans as they provided music for masqueraders.
Christmas times on Tragarete Rd. were always very special for me. Kids running along the sidewalks, popping fire crackers and racing each other with their toy cars and trucks. Carol singers filling the air with their Christmas songs and shoppers greeting each other. Then there were the inviting smells of Christmas cake and cookies wafting out of the bakeries.
The activity would start at around 3 a.m. with the garbage truck going by collecting garbage along the road and I could hear the workers hosing down the sidewalks. Then at around 4 a.m. the birds would wake up and start to enchant me with their sweet melodious voices. They would start softly but soon enough they were singing at the top of their voices.
By 5 a.m. Tragarete Rd. would be fully awake with people traveling to work and soon enough it would be time for me to rise and get ready for school. The bakeries along Tragarete Rd. would soon start to wake up and begin their daily chores, filling the air with their yummy smells.
Then, at the day's end as I would lie in bed having done my homework and said my prayers, I would listen to Tragarete Rd. getting ready to settle down for the night and by 9 p.m. things would start to quiet down. Tragarete Rd. would indeed go very quiet with the occasional car driving by and the occasional person walking along the sidewalk. All would now be still for the night until at around 3 a.m. the next day.

Watching the cars go by
When I was just but a wee one, I used to enjoy standing on our front balcony and looking down at the cars going by. This was probably one of my favorite things to do at night while the family watched TV.
Some of the time my brother Jeffrey would be standing beside me doing the same thing and some of the time our cousins would join us. Then there were the times when I would be alone. These were the best times for me, when I could just stand there by myself and allow my imagination to roam as I looked down at the cars driving by.
In those days I had just enough vision to make out the colors and sizes of the cars driving by and I could distinguish them without much difficulty from the trucks, bicycles, motorcycles, and buses.
I truly enjoyed watching them go by and I would make up little games in my head such as: To see which color car was the most popular, which type of vehicle drove by the most, plus more.
My limited sight did not allow me to see much more than this but I was always so happy to just stand there and watch. I was never sure how long I would stand there but my parents never seemed to mind me doing it. The air was fresh and cool, the smell of the road was so enjoyable, and the passersby never seemed to care that someone may have been looking down on them.

Can I enjoy a concert?
This is a question that I am often asked by those who do not really know me. The answer is a resounding yes and as a general rule of thumb, one does not have to be able to see in order to enjoy a concert.
True it is that it does help to be able to see but I can definitely use my listening skills to help me enjoy a concert. There is nothing better than being able to appreciate great singing and instrument playing. Nothing more enjoyable than being able to get involved in what is being said up on stage.
So, back to the question at hand: Can I, as a blind person, enjoy a concert? Most definitely!

Could card making be for me?
A few months ago I managed to finally get all of the things that I would need to start my new venture of learning how to make my own cards. With the help of my dear friend, Denise (also known as the boss), I have managed to come a long way since then.
Some may think that as a blind person this may not be possible to do, but with a little perseverance and patience it can be done.
First you need the all important cuttle bug which is very heavy but portable enough. Then you need to learn how to navigate the cuttle bug. There are the flaps to pull down at both ends and the plates to familiarize yourself with.
Next you need to purchase the folders with whichever patterns you wish to have, the stickers of your choice, and finally you are ready to start making your own cards. Now you need to learn how to place the plain cards between the folder and straighten it out before putting it through the cuttle bug.
Denise has spent some time guiding me by phone. She is very patient and a very fun teacher. She knows exactly how to get me going. Denise is also blind so it does help me when she gives me instructions and certain reference points to look for.
I am really looking forward to becoming proficient at my card making.

My beloved ice skating rink
I shall never forget my beloved ice skating rink for as long as I live. Huge, outdoors, and simply refreshing moments to remember.
It is located on the Toronto waterfront. It is always a pleasure to skate there, with the wind blowing vigorously across my cheeks and playing roughly in my hair. So many others skating along with me and whooping for joy as they race around the rink.
Kids learning to skate and their parents watching over them. Teens racing each other around the rink. Adults skating leisurely and chatting amiably to each other as their blades scrape along the ice. And me? Skating with friends and just enjoying the outdoors on a winter's evening.
I shall always remember this. I went mainly at Christmas time and as I look back now I can visualize the lights of all colors and sizes blinking as I skated around the rink with my friends. Ah, yes! My favorite ice skating rink forever.

They are not the ones who choose to be racists and those who believe that their bad behaviour in public is acceptable.
I write and record audio mysteries that are being used at such events as murder mystery evenings as well as at public awareness and team building events. I promote understanding, tolerance, and problem solving and my audio mysteries continue to be broadcasted around the world and you can listen to them anywhere! On the plane or train! In the car or right there in your home! On your i device or computer!
Please join my campaign against bullying (CAB) by supporting my efforts to keep on writing and recording!
If you truly care then you will certainly dare!"
