I enjoy! My other passion

I guess that when it comes to my other passion there are so many for me to choose from. But, after my work and before my chess playing, knitting, and pottery, comes my passion to write mysteries.

This has always been my passion and it has certainly taken over a huge chunk of space in my schedule from time to time.

Yes, I am guilty of having neglected my work on occasions to go off and write mysteries and I humbly submit that I have been quite successful with my Crime Crushers audio mysteries series.

I have written 3 seasons along with a 12 Days of Christmas box set and I have some special plans to write a second Christmas box set along with some mini series for podcasting.

Lots of big plans but not sure how/when I’ll be able to accomplish this.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advisor, wishing you a terrific day.

A landmark victory for all Canadians: November 29, 2010

And as I sit here writing this blog, I can still feel the tears rolling down my face and chills running up my back.  It was probably one of the most important days in my life!  For it was the day when I and my team received a lower Canadian Court's decision that our charter challenge to the Canadian Government over their inaccessible websites was successful.

I can honestly admit now that I had no idea that it would ever get this far and beyond!  I had no clue as to the actions, reactions, pro actions, and large ripple effects that this could have had!

For me, it was all about doing what I thought was right.  To protect the future of our kids and to raise my voice on behalf of blind and vision-impaired Canadians and all Canadians with a disability!  I can only liken my feeling to one where I just managed to scale one of the highest waves in the ocean!

As the late Richard Quan tweeted, "A landmark victory for all Canadians!" Richard was one of my many mentors and in his memory I say, may the fight continue!

I give thanks to God for having given me the strength to do this!  To my lawyer David Baker, accessibility expert Jutta Treviranus, and mentors Robin East and Denise Sanders. To John Rea and Sharlyn Ayotte for their constant support and to Susan Pinder for all of her help and encouragement.  Finally to Derek Wilson and Gabriella Sharrard and so many others who helped to make a difference.

This day shall forever remain with me!

A hard nut to crack: When Sophie followed my example

Sophie has been my hairdresser for several years now and for the most part I have been very happy with her services. But every now and then she somehow forgets to follow my instructions and here is where she decides to do her own thing, as they say.

So, how do I deal with this?  I just need to be very much on the ball.  To follow her every step of the way and to make sure that she does exactly what I want or wish her to do.

The other day I decided to take matters into my own hands.  I decided to take a razor and trace out my outline at the back of my head and presto!  It sure worked!  At the end of my haircut we were both very happy.

At the doctor's office

I am ready to admit that I would not venture into any doctor's office if it is the first time that I am visiting said office.  Why?  Well, here are my reasons.

I need to learn my way there.  I need to familiarize with the layout of the office.  I need to get to know the secretaries and doctors.  I need to let them know that I am blind and require assistance to negotiate the office.

This is the formula that has always worked for me.  I always find that it is best not to surprise staff and doctors alike for the first time whenever I go in for a visit.  True it is that most people are now much more aware as to how to interact with someone who is blind but I do not take any chances.

Not every doctor would be like my family physician, Dani Manis.  Or my dentist, Gordon Yaser.  Or my ENT specialist, Everton Gooden or my Gynaecologist, Nathan Roth.

If I Believe

If I believe in me, then others will believe too and in turn, if I believe in others then soon the world will start believing.  This has been my motto for all of my life and it continues to work for me.

When I was a kid, I believed that if I worked hard enough I could achieve my objectives at school and it worked.  When I was a teen I believed that if I pushed myself hard enough I could accomplish my goals to obtain a master's degree in Business administration and you know what?  I was one of the first blind persons in Canada to graduate with a master's degree in business administration from McGill University.

When I graduated, I believed that if I tried hard enough, I could become a member of any blue chip Canadian company and you know what?  I did it in grand style.  I worked for companies like the Bank of Montreal, IBM Canada, and the Royal Bank of Canada. Through good times and bad times, I kept on believing in myself and when I was downsized in the 90s, I still kept on believing in me.

I have been in business for myself for the past 15 years and for the most part it has been a continuing struggle to keep believing in me but at the end of the day belief is what keeps me going.  As a professional student at heart, I have managed to use belief to become one of the first blind persons in the world to obtain certifications in Microsoft Systems Engineering and Novelle Network Administration and I will keep on using belief to enrich my academic as well as my professional life.  I am also going to use belief to convince others to believe in themselves.  As I see it, belief is the only way for us to keep on believing.  If I continue to believe in me, then my task to help the kids of the future believe in themselves will only become easier.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and share my blogs with the rest of the world.  I invite you to contact me anytime at donnajodhan@sterlingcreations.ca.
