A necessary evil! Woes of a colonoscopy

This is probably not my favourite medical procedure and I can guarantee you that it is definitely the same for the majority of us; it does not matter whether or not you are a mainstream person.

As a blind/vision-impaired person I need to make sure that I follow the directions as to when to take my medication before the day of the procedure and how frequently I need to take it.  Then, after the procedure I again need to do the same.  No different for anyone but I just need to be extra careful to ensure that I understand what to do and when to take it.

All in a day’s work, as they say!  The worst part is always the awful feelings encountered before and after the procedure.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly award-winning sight loss coach and accessibility advisor wishing you a terrific day.

Trials and tribulations: Another colonoscopy

I just wish upon a star that one day I won't have to have them anymore. However, I have a strange feeling that this may just be wishful thinking.

The last one was not the worst of them and good thing that Gabriella went with me.  We had to wait for a bit before I was called and then to wait a bit more for the doctor to do her part.  At the very end, however, I could feel a few pangs of pain as the doctor was finishing up.

My doctor is very good. She is pleasant, humorous, and very accommodating. She tells me exactly what she is going to do and at the end of the procedure she reads out the instructions to me.  I just wish, however, that she was able to give them to me in an electronic format.

Not very pleasant: Challenges of a colonoscopy

I guess that this particular procedure is probably most challenging for the majority of us even at the best of times. But for me, who is unable to see what the doctor is doing, it often leads to my imagination taking over.

Thank goodness that just before the procedure commences I am given something to relax me so then I have no idea what is taking place.

Before I am given this, however, the nurse and doctor do their best to put me at ease by telling me what is going on and what is going to happen, but for all of this it does not make me feel any better.  So I lie there on my back and do my best not to get too anxious about it all.

I sing softly but loud enough that those around me can hear and this sure helps me to feel better.

No readable medical forms for me

This is one of my greatest concerns: whenever I go to a hospital for any type of medical procedure, I am unable to read the medical forms for myself. I have to depend on sighted assistance to do so and it is a fact that no two persons will read something in the same way. No matter how hard one tries, they would never be able to read any form accurately and do it word for word. I have a hard time understanding why it is doctors' offices are unable to produce forms electronically. They create these forms using a word processor so why is it so difficult to simply convert these documents into an electronic file format and then make them available to everyone?

So many persons can benefit from this, not just blind persons, and so much time would be saved if this is done because those needing them could read them beforehand prior to arriving at the hospital. Yes, and they could be emailed to the person if that person has an email address.

Am I being unrealistic or am I dreaming of something that may be just around the corner? In the case of the latter, I hope not. There is absolutely no reason why I could not hope for something that could potentially benefit so many, save lots of time, and standardize so much.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and help me spread the word about this. Come visit me at www.sterlingcreations.ca.

The challenges with medical forms

Talk about having to part with confidentiality and privacy and there you have it. When it comes to the completion of medical forms, I still need to depend on sighted assistance to do so. If I am at a doctor’s office and I am required to complete a form, I either need to ask the receptionist or the one accompanying me. Or if I have to do it from home, I have to depend on sighted assistance.

One of the things that I would love to see is the introduction of a system where I don’t have to depend on sighted assistance to do this. Maybe some sort of online system or maybe a phone system? If I need sighted assistance to complete medical forms, then I make very sure that the one I ask to help me is one that I trust with my life. My family, or very close friends.

Being put in a situation where I need sighted assistance to help me complete medical forms makes me extremely vulnerable. I am depending on the person to fill in exactly what I say. I am divulging personal information to someone else. My privacy and confidentiality are being exposed. Maybe someone will read this and come up with some sort of solution!

I’m Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and tell others about this circumstance. Visit www.nfb.org to learn more.

I Must Not Give Up

This has been my motto ever since losing my vision in early 2004.  I must not give up, I will not give up, and I will pray every day for a miracle.  There are some who have said to me that I should not hope for miracles because it only brings heart aches each time something is suggested and then fails.  I know that this is partly true; heartaches are not easy to endure but for the fighter that I am, I will keep on fighting.

So much keeps on happening in the world of medical break throughs.  Stem cell advancements are continually encouraging us to hope and for me the hope lives on.  This is why I still hold on to my large print crossword books, my close circuit TV, and all of my treasured scrap books.  Every night I rock myself to sleep with vivid memories of colors, shapes, scenes, plus so much more.  I must not give up for I do then I might as well die!
