A disturbing sensation! When my ears clogged up

I can certainly tell you that as someone who is blind/vision impaired, it is almost always double jeopardy whenever my ears clog up, and why?  Because I lose my balance and, as I cannot see where I am going, it is difficult for me to concentrate on maintaining my balance while trying to find my way around both at the same time.

It is no fun and for anyone losing their balance it is not very pleasant. So, here is how I deal with this dilemma.

Whenever I lose my balance, I find a safe spot and sit and wait for this to pass.  Sometimes it does not take long for my balance to return but occasionally it takes quite some time and I just need to either wait it out if I can or gingerly move around without falling or bumping into things.

No fun for me: Dealing with balance problems

I can honestly tell you that dealing with balance problems is no fun for me and I can also say that it is no fun for anyone.

For a blind or vision-impaired person, balance problems are even more acute because when you are unable to see and you unexpectedly become disoriented, then this is where you are thrown into unfamiliar territory and you have to struggle to regain some semblance of orientation.

I probably cannot fully explain the feeling or ramifications but suffice it to say that it is not a very nice time for me.

I could compare it to being on a ship and suddenly a wave lashes the ship and throws and tosses us around, leaving us stunned and uncertain of our surroundings. Maybe this comparison could help to give a better picture.

How colds disorient me

Yes, they sure do! When my head is all stuffed up, then I don’t hear well and I become confused. When I constantly have to take care of a runny nose while traveling or doing something, I lose my concentration and focus, and when my ears are all clogged up then I surely become disoriented.

For the mainstream person it is definitely the same but when you are blind it is a bit more difficult because whereas the mainstream person can use their sight to help them maintain their equilibrium, we do not have that luxury of sight to help us. So what do I do?

Whenever I have a cold, I take things very easy. I try not to work too much outside or at my computer.

Please Don't Sneak Up on Me

I don't think that at the best of times, the majority of us appreciate being sneaked up upon but I can tell you that as a blind person, it bothers me quite a bit when someone does this to me.

Some people may think that it would be fun to sneak up on a blind person; but it is not.  When you are without enough sight to see around you and then someone does this, it could make things quite difficult for the blind person.  Sometimes, I am able to tell if someone is sneaking up on me because I can either hear or sense their presence but whenever I am caught off guard, I get very nervous.  So, please do not sneak up on me.

As a blind person, I do my best to take advantage of my sense of hearing but when this sense fails to warn me of impending sneakers, it's a bit of a downer for me.  It's enough to be able to cope with what's around you and we do not need unexpected incidents to throw off our balance.   Just my two cents for today.
