Hi there and hope everyone is continuing to muster up their positive power. For today, I really want to zoom in on our abilities to take matters into our own hands and we can do this by realizing that the best way to do so is to take a step in the right direction.

Trust me when I tell you that it is much easier than you think.

You may be thinking that given the present Covid times, it may not be that easy; but no!

Let's follow the example of those enthusiastic young musicians who are using their talents to entertain residents of long-term care homes!

They are helping to put smiles on the faces of our seniors! So let's keep it up! Let's keep reaching out!

And my quote for today?

"The best feeling in the world is finally knowing you took a step in the right direction. A step towards the future where everything that you never thought possible, is possible."

Expecting and waiting: Waiting to see Mom

For better or for worse, or should I say it like this! There is nothing for me to do but to wait to see my beloved Mom. The last time I saw her was in early January 2020 and seven months later, as we travel through August, I am still waiting to see her and be with her!

I have to settle for hearing her voice across the miles when we chat via phone. As often as we can my sister-in-law, Gayle, arranges Facetime sessions so that Mom can see me. In addition, I now get friends to take photos of me at home and then I email them to Gayle so that she can show them to Mom.

For the most part this is working and thanks to technology this can help to cushion the lack of in person interaction. It has always been the tradition for me to spend the summer with Mom and in July we would spend 10 wonderful days in sweet Saint Lucia! Unfortunately, not this year!

So, I need to keep telling myself ‘when’ instead of ‘if.’ It's the only thing that will save my sanity!

A wonderful person: Thanking Nadia

With so many of us struggling to keep our hair in orderly fashion because of the Covid lockdown, it was really a gift from Heaven, so to speak, when my hairdresser Nadia helped me out by cutting my hair almost two months after the lockdown began.

This is what I call unexpected kindness and understanding during these hard times. Nadia knew that for me it would be extra difficult, given my limited ability to keep my hair on track, so she took the time to sanitize her salon and then called me to come in. I was the only one there.

Nadia worked quickly. First she sanitized my hands, made sure she cut my hair, then sanitized my hands once more. The entire session took no more than 20 minutes.

Thank you so much, Nadia!

For better or for worse: A changing world

Gosh! The world has certainly changed over the past few months and it was oh, so very unexpected! It has changed for everyone but for me I now need to readjust the way I do things.

Much more wiping down of surface areas around the house. More care not to touch too many surfaces when I leave the house. Walk with hand sanitizer and wear a mask each time I go out.

I limit my out-of-the-home outings to just one per week to only get what I need. My home office remains the same.

Yes, it is indeed a changing world and I just need to get used to it. Must check on friends and neighbours much more now and the important thing for me is to only share info when it can be verified.

Hi there! So far and so good; we're doing just fine and we need to keep up our spirits!

However, we need to continue to think positive and to find ways to remain so. We need to tell ourselves that we are going to defeat the unseen enemy much sooner than later! So, let's work together to do just that!

Here's my quote for today:

"What are the things that you can't see that are important? I would say justice, truth, humility, service, compassion, love... They're the guiding lights of a life." Jimmy Carter

Challenges for everyone: Dealing with Covid-19

It came upon us so unexpectedly. Not sure if I could say that it sneaked up on us; maybe we were caught napping and now here we are! Already having had to spend months in self isolation and not sure how much longer this is going to continue.

For me, I can only say that it is a mixed bag of everything. No big need to complain but just hoping and praying that so many others can weather the storm. I run errands with Stephanie once weekly where we both wear masks and take all of the necessary precautions. I do my best to ensure that our weekly routine is well-organized and not too lengthy.

My home office continues to hum along as I have been working from home for several years now so this is not anything new for me. I have placed myself on a strict daily schedule of working, exercising, staying away from the snacks, watching my daily doses of cooking shows, and limiting my newscasts.

I usually take some brain breaks during the day and then I make sure to spend a bit of time on the phone to catch up with friends. So far so good and I top off my day with calls to Mom to check on her.

This was long overdue: Recommitting to my piano playing

For me, I think that this is a very long overdue commitment and one that embarrasses me at times. I have had two of the finest electronic keyboards in my home for many years now and yet I have never taken my commitment, or rather re-commitment, seriously enough.

So hats off to the Covid for having encouraged and driven me to make good on my recommitment. This is probably a tongue in cheek comment on my part for lack of a better comment.

So I'll do my best to commit to 3 times per week. I'll practice my scales and finger exercises and then follow this up with playing my easy-going pieces at each session. Not sure where this is going but the important thing here is that I'll get to enjoy some well-needed down time each time I play.

I smiled all day! Playing the piano across the miles

The Covid-19 lockdown has definitely brought some benefits for me, like playing my piano across the miles.

Yes, and believe it or not I have managed to get back into playing my piano after all these years and I plan to play my piano across the miles.

Yes, for Mom and to have some interesting playing times with Angie in England. This will be truly playing the piano across the miles and it will be a good way for me to re-familiarize myself with my piano which has been patiently waiting for me to come back to it.

Hello there and how are we all doing today?

Ready for a bit of positive power from me?

Well, it's all about giving love, spreading love, and creating love! Love is what makes the world go round and I can't stress how much more of love we need in order to conquer Covid!

So let's open up our hearts, hands, and minds!

Here is a quote that emphasizes this!

"There is a force in the world and an energy that you can put out, and when you put out love, it comes back to you. I think that's my basic philosophy." Jennifer Lopez

A lingering memory: Remembering springtime in England

It is hard to explain but I can only say that I have always had a very soft spot and special place in my heart for England!

True it is that I have visited England several times and have had the good fortune to meet and make wonderful friends but there is something additional that is extra special to me.

Maybe it is that I truly admire the Brits for the way they fought and conducted themselves during the two World Wars or maybe it is just that I simply love so much about Britain; especially springtime!

Oh yes! Springtime in England when I studied there so many years ago! Great memories of fresh spring air, birds singing all around me, fragrant flowers everywhere, and such a relaxing atmosphere!

I can still recall so many images in my mind's eye! The sun shining gently down on me as I walked to school.  The fragrance of freshness all around! Cool breezes blowing through my hair and rolling softly down my cheeks.

Springtime in England heralded hope and expectation for me! It was a time to revive my sleepy spirit and to recover my lost commitments!

Keeping my mind intact: Limiting my listening

We are living in very uncertain times; times where we are never sure what to expect to see and hear. It can either control your thought process or you can choose not to let it do so.

I choose not to let it do so and I do this by only listening twice daily to the news. Early in the morning and then in the evening. Throughout the day I fill my listening with radio and TV programs that focus on such things as cooking shows, light entertainment and, of course, soft and easy listening music.

For me, it is the only way to keep my sanity and to stay focused. Above all, to remain on track.

So very precious: Facetiming with Mom

This is a brand new experience for me and has arisen all due to the Covid-19 situation. In the normal scheme of things, Mom is not a technology person but is interested enough to be basically familiar with some of the wonders of the iPhone.

So, my sister in law, Gayle, and I treated her to a Facetime session and it was all Gayle's idea.

I think that Mom enjoyed her Facetime session as she got to check out how my hair and eyebrows looked. Despite not being able to see her, it was gratifying enough for me that she could see me.

We normally communicate via phone but the extra Facetime treat sure helped us both.

Okay, and what message do I have for today? What should I say in order to promote my power of positiveness? Just this! When it comes to charting our future, we are in charge! We hold the key to how we do, where we go, when we do so and how we do it! This means that we can each pull up our bootstraps and make the best of our present world! It also means that together, if we row in the same direction, we will obtain success! Here is my quote for today.

"My will shall shape the future. Whether I fail or succeed shall be no man's doing but my own. I am the force. I can clear any obstacle before me or I can be lost in the maze. My choice, my responsibility. Win or lose, only I hold the key to my destiny." Elaine Maxwell

Just another challenge: Changing the battery for my smoke detector

It is always a bit of a challenge whenever it comes to changing the battery for my smoke detector. First off, I am made aware that the battery needs changing because I hear an annoying beep coming from my smoke detector.

So, it is time to spring into action. I drag my step stool and place it under the smoke detector which is located high up on my wall. I make sure that I position it correctly and then I climb carefully onto it and locate the smoke detector.

Next, I gingerly remove the cover to the smoke detector which houses the battery chamber and then I climb carefully down from my step stool.  The final stage of this entire process takes place when I need to ask my Super to help me change it.

A reality check: Unable to use my keys to press the buttons

I know that as we take the extra steps to cope with Covid-19, part of the process entails that we are careful when we press buttons. To this end, there are several people in my condo building who use their keys to press the elevator buttons.

For me, this is not as easy. First, I need to locate the intended button and it is not easy for me if I use a key. I normally use my fingers to identify the buttons. They are marked with numbers in large print shapes.

If I use a key then I cannot feel the buttons let alone be able to locate them easily. Most of all, I cannot feel the shapes of the numbers. This is my challenge so I have no choice but to continue to use my fingers.

Too bad! This was a nice thought.

I never heard it: When the tea bag fell

It is always a challenge whenever anything falls onto my kitchen floor and I guess that it is the same for everyone. However, the challenge for me is that I am either aware of it or I am not.

If I am aware that something has fallen then I need to find the fallen object and to ensure that I clean up any accompanying spill or residual. If I am not aware then here is where the additional challenge is. I will only discover the fallen object if I step on it and then I need to repeat the process as above.

In this particular instance, I was aware when the tea bag fell. Luckily, I heard the soft thud when it fell and then I had to find it, pick it up, and then make sure that I cleaned up the accompanying spill.

There was a spill all right. I cleaned it up but then to ensure that I had gotten everything I took the additional step to mop up my entire kitchen.

As I continue to promote the power of positivity, I thought that I would share this thought with you. It is often so very difficult to be motivated and so often we turn to external sources to help us out. It could be a song, a piece of poetry, or even someone else.
But, how about this? I found this quote and thought I would share it with you.
"I was looking for someone to inspire me, motivate me, support me, keep me focused... Someone who would love me, cherish me, make me happy, and I realized all along that I was looking for myself." Sadhak Anshit
