Remembering the faces

This is a constant challenge and this is what I have to continuously keep remembering. As they say, faces change and the face of a child often changes as they grow into adulthood. So because of this my memories are often way behind when it comes to remembering the faces.

For example; the faces of my nieces and nephews have all changed since I lost my sight in 2004 but in order for me to keep up I need to depend on the memories of their faces at the time I lost my vision, which was in January 2004. And now that I no longer have the vision to see faces I need to depend on those I trust to describe faces to me.

Once I can orient myself to this concept I am fine. It took me quite a while to adjust but today I am just fine. I still use my memories but now I add someone else's descriptions to my memory bank

Checking the mail carefully

This is exactly what I do each time I receive it but my way of doing this is a bit different to the regular person. It is what I do as someone without sight. I use my sense of touch to help me decipher it all. Windowed envelopes go into their own pile as I know that they are either bank or utility statements, invoices, bills or cheques. Envelopes with stamps go into a separate pile as I know them to be personal letters. Flyers are thrown out, and those smooth like envelopes are put into another pile for further inspection.

This is usually the regular way of checking my mail but there are times when this strategy does not always work. I can also tell the difference between cards in envelopes and other types of mail. In general, cards have their very own shape and their thickness is another way to tell them apart.

Junk mail usually have some tell tale signs to them. They are sometimes bulky, they come in smooth envelopes, or they may come in the form of booklets or loose folded sheets. Flyers are flyers. So this is it in a nutshell: my way of checking the mail.

When the blue dust came

And when it came I did not even know. It came and made a total mess of my very clean carpet and as it lay there on my carpet, silent and without any noise, I only knew when my mom told me.

This is the problem with dust as far as a blind person is concerned. We never know when it is around. We never know where it is and we can never tell how much of it there is or what color it is. We only discover when our fingers and hands find it on hard surfaces but we are powerless to discover on carpets unless the dust is of a grainy quality.

Just imagine my surprise when Mom told me that blue dust was scattered all around my bedroom. These are the times when I wish I had my vision to see. Oh well, all in a day's work.

My friend the sea

My dearest friend: For as long as I have known myself you have always been there for me. You have never failed me. You have always been able to help me cope and you know so well how much I have depended on you to help motivate, encourage, and support me.

Many may think that ours is a somewhat strange friendship but at the end of the day it is really not. I always look forward to smelling your fresh and lingering scent. I always long to hear your waves as they roll gently ashore. I always look forward to feeling your warm water over my body and to your current rocking me gently back and forth in your surf.

I always enjoy tasting your salty water and I always admire the way you are able to come up with some tiny surprise for me every now and then. Like placing a stray shell in my hand as I sit in the surf playing with the sand or tossing a bunch of seaweed onto me as your current goes by.

Yes, my dear sea, you are my special friend and shall always be so. You and I grew up together and I discovered your friendship oh so long ago. You watched silently as I progressed through my teens and into adulthood and you know only too well that I will always come back to you from wherever I am. See you soon!

Trusting the one you walk with

I was reminded of this in June 2014 when I attended the funeral of my mom's cousin. There we were in the church and the ushers were seating us. One of them who I did not know came up to me and offered me his arm and as we walked he said, "'I guess that you have to trust the one you walk with, right?"

I did not think of it right away but upon further reflection I conceded that he was absolutely correct. I have to trust the one I walk with and it does not matter whether or not I know them. Scary you say? Only if you let it be so.

Come to think of it, is this not what we all do each time we fly? We have to trust the pilot who flies the plane and chances are that we would not even know them. The same holds for a bus driver, a cab driver, and anyone else who we need to trust whenever we drive or fly.

Trust for me is very important but there are times when I have to put my hesitation aside and go with the flow. I guess that this is so for all, if not most, of us who are blind.

Those pesky deck chairs

Each time I go to the seaside on my annual vacation, I always end up fighting with those pesky deck chairs. They reside near poolside and it cannot be helped if they are often left strewed all over the place. This cannot be helped.

More often than not it is the hotel's guests who leave them scattered around. This after the hotel has gone to such trouble to place them in an orderly manner. Then I come along and as I walk by my feet come in contact with them and alas! I end up with a bruise to various parts of my foot. To my toe, instep, back of my ankle, or even on the lower part of my calf.

There is not much that anyone can really do about this problem. I just need to be extra careful whenever I walk close to the pool. Just another thing for me to remember.

Those lovable little birds

Oh how I love those lovable little birds! Their voices are as pure as breezes in a bottle and I always look forward to them waking me up each morning whenever I visit my mom. They demand nothing and they ask for nothing. They will sing for me at no cost. They will entertain me at no cost. All I need to do is to just give them a bit of food each day and voila! They are there for me every day!

When I had my sight I could see them when they came close enough. They were so colorful and so elegant. They flew all around me and above me. They ran races with each other and they chirped with gusto as they played and flew.

These are the memories that I have of my lovable little birds! So free and so alive! Just so forever and forever!

I know when she is praying

You would think that by now after all of my years on this Earth, I would know when it is time for me to be quiet. That is, whenever my mom is praying I need to tone things down so that she can have her private moments. When I had vision it was quite easy. I would walk into her room and I would immediately see her sitting quietly with her Rosary and her Prayer book and the flickering candle close by.

Now that my vision is gone I have another way to know. First off, Mom usually says her prayers first thing in the morning or sometimes she would do it in mid afternoon or last thing at night. So I have specific times to be careful at. However there is something else.

Whenever I smell the fragrance of the candle I know that it is time for me to be quiet. I turn down the volume on the TV and then I tip toe around so as to make as little noise as I can. Does all of this work? You bet!

Distinguishing the documents

Well, I do not think that the method that I am about to describe would come as anything new to most persons who are blind, but for the heck of it I'll tell the sighted world. I use this method whenever I travel.

Each time I go on a trip I need to take all kinds of various documents with me: a copy of my itinerary, a copy of my hotel details, and copies of other documents that I may need on my trip. So how do I keep track of everything?

Each document has a specific place in my carry-on and they are marked in a specific way. No, not with Braille labels because it would be a bit awkward to have them at the front of printed documents. I use staples to help me distinguish my documents and I also count the number of pages for each document. In addition, staples are placed in a specific way. Some are placed horizontally, others are placed vertically, and sometimes I may have two sets of staples on a single document depending on whether or not there are documents with the same amount of pages.

After reading this you may think that this is probably all a lot of work and memorizing and you would be correct. But if I expect to keep things straight in my mind I do not see a choice for myself. It takes a bit of memorizing but it is definitely worth the time for me. At least after I have gotten everything straight in my mind and after I have learned my own system, it is very easy.

I know where to find what I need to find, and I put the documents in order of importance to me. So far so good and fingers crossed that this method continues to work for me.

My coconut trees

They were tall and graceful! They were huge and they always towered over me! Yes, they were big, stately, and they never failed to fascinate me. The thing is that I was never really able to see them when I was a child because I never had enough vision to do so but when I got my vision it was one of the first things that I beheld and I was not disappointed!

I never told anyone how delighted I was when I first saw them! They were like magic to me and I never failed to admire their stateliness and their size. I loved to watch them sway freely in the breeze. I loved to watch as their branches would first spread out and then come together as the breeze would first pull them apart and then bring them back together. I could even sometimes see the coconuts hanging from the tree branches and sometimes I would even be in the nick of time to see one of those large fruits fall to the ground with a sound of a large thump.

Ah yes! Those were my coconut trees, imbedded in my mind forever.

Meditations at the seaside

I can still remember it all now, my meditations at the seaside. For these were the times when I got to dream! Not just dream but really dream! When I got to dream about such things as fairies, wizards, mermaids, nymphs, angels, and other wonderful things.

I got to dream happy things. Girls and boys playing in the sand, building castles and mountains, surfing the waves, floating on waterbeds, walking on the glassy blue sea, and flying kites on the beach. I managed to dream about Santa Claus on his hover craft, on his fishing boat, and on his super ship. I got to dream of being able to walk over the tops of trees and jump from branch to branch. I got to dream of being able to play tennis on the firm sand of the beach, kick a football, and bat a cricket ball.

I got to dream of being able to race along the sand with my beloved dogs, run after the blue back crabs, and skip over the incoming waves. I got to dream of so much and it is at the seaside where I was able to formulate my meditations into what it would be like when I grew up.

Those were such happy days for me. Days that would now never come back to me but that's just okay because I have my memories, and some day when I am no longer dreaming, I'll see it all for real! When the good Lord reunites me with my loved ones.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly accessibility advocate, wishing you a happy day.

Remembering the lagoon

There are childhood memories and then there are childhood memories and I have to admit that memories of that lovely little lagoon near our beach house falls into the must-remember category. For it was not just a lovely little lagoon, it was the best lagoon that I have ever known!

This little gem was located practically within feet of our side door. It was small, yes! Its waters flowed and ebbed oh so gently and there was a bridge for us to sit on and either fish or simply relax. I could barely see its quiet waters but on a bright day I could see the sun dancing on its surface. This was enough for me and my imagination did the rest.

My brothers and cousins often told me that small fishes lived in my favorite little lagoon, along with crabs and frogs, but this did not matter to me. I still loved my little lagoon and whenever I could I would go with others to the bridge and there I would sit and inhale the fresh air of the nearby ocean. Many times I would walk into the mouth of the lagoon and there I would stand and bury my toes in the cool sand and allow the cool water to lap over my feet.

My brothers used to build boats out of large coconut tree leaves and they would have boat races. Everyone would go fishing and I would simply just sit there and take it all in, spinning stories in my mind of crabs and fishes going on all kinds of adventures.

Ah yes! Memories of that special lovely little lagoon imprinted in my memory bank forever.
